I am a Temple grad and I am actually leaving general surgery to go back there next year for Anesthesiology. Overall I would say that most residency programs at Temple are very good, including anesthesiology. It's a typical inner-city hospital with lots of pathology to be seen by every department. The new dean of the medical school has been actively recruiting people from all over the country to come work and teach there and they have gotten a few new great anesthesia attendings. Each class has 8-9 residents in it and at my interview I was told that they have a new outpatient pain rotation and a new regional anesthesia rotation for this year's class. All the residents and attendings I met during my fourth-year rotation and during my interview were extremely nice and seemed to be genuinely happy there.
I must also say that Temple is not a "cush" program, though, if that's what you're looking for. The residents work hard. And as is with many large, urban residency programs, the residents have a lot of autonomy but they also have a lot of responsibility. Depending on your learning style, this could be very good for many people. As far as the make-up of the residents, there are a few DO's, I think one IMG in the CA-3 class, and the program's about 30% female. Both the chairman (Dr. Barnette) and the PD (Dr. Schartel) are great people to work with. If I were you I would definitely interview there, but if you have other Philly programs to inview at, try to get them all around the same time so you can go make a week out of it and only pay for one trip.
If you, or anyone else, has any other questions feel free to PM me. I had a great med school experience and I'm looking forward to going back there for residency.
I hope this helps! 🙂
