Hi!

I have researched this and found some threads that say graduate GPA like a traditional masters or SMP get factored into overall GPA for DO schools, unlike MD where graduate and undergraduate GPAs are calculated separately. However, other posters have said that the two GPAs are also separate, so I am quite confused. I am currently deciding between doing a post bacc or an SMP and knowing if an SMP will boost my overall GPA for DO schools will be my deciding factor. I hope someone can confirm which information is true.
Thanks!

Generally you need about a 3.5 in an SMP for it to help and values lower than that will tend to hurt you. It won’t be calculated into your undergrad GPA so if it is below a schools cut off then you’ll want to take undergrad credits to be boosted high enough to get around cut offs.

Graduate school work may boost your “overall” gpa but it will not influence your “undergrad” cgpa or sgpa, which is what admissions committees will be most focused on.

If you need a boost in your undergrad gpa, you’ll want to do post-bacc work instead of a masters/smp.

It all depends how's your c/sGPA right now.
What state are you in?
Your MCAT?
Your EC?

SMP gpa will not be combined into your undergraduate gpa. If you go SMP route and your gpa goes below their cut off then most likely your med school chances will be zero. Go to that smp which is linked to DO.
