How is medical school? How long do you study for? How long are the classes and what kind of activites do you partake in. Also how many classes do you have to attend in your first year.

How is medical school? Fun, hard, interesting.

How long do you study for? It depends on how close tests are, whether or not it's the weekend, how late classes go that day, etc... anywhere from 1-14 hours per day.

How long are the classes and what kind of activites do you partake in. Usually 4-6 hours of classes every day. You do labs (cadaver, OMM if DO), standardized patient scenarios, skills labs (intubation, IVs, lung/heart sounds).

Also how many classes do you have to attend in your first year? Totally depends on your school. Some schools don't have required attendance, some schools have pop quizzes, some schools have required attendance.

How is medical school? I am enjoying it so far. It is a lot of work, but nothing has been impossible. I'm only finishing up my first block, though.

How long do you study for? I probably average about 4-6 hours a day (that's not how long I sit in there and try to study, though haha - I've discounted breaks for Facebook and SDN, distractions, convos with friends, etc.) and it definitely jumps up when tests are getting close. I have never studied 14 hours a day, though.

How long are the classes and what kind of activites do you partake in? We're in class for 2ish hours a day then lab for 3 or so. When we finish Anatomy (tomorrow) and start block II we'll be in class from 8 - 11 or 8 - 12. Some days we have afternoon lectures or clinical classes, but usually we don't. I spend a lot of time with my husband going to the movies or at the house or at a park or whatever. We also have tons of intramurals, class get-togethers, lunch meetings for various clubs, etc.

So how many classes do you have to attend in your first year? Depends on your school, as the other poster said. We were "required' to be in lab, but they only took attendance twice and if you weren't there you got like a point subtracted. We don't have required attendance for any other basic science stuff, though.

OMG thats so cool! only 2-3 hours of class per day?
A few med students that I have talked to said they start at 8am and end at like 4pm, which i definitely do not want to do.
do majority of med schools have 2-3 hours of class per day?

Even if you're only in class for a few hours a day you do know you're going to spend the rest of that time studying 😵

did you not read the 3 hours of lab after the two hours of class?

Class can last all day. Monday and Thursday we have classes starting at 8am in the morning and Anatomy lab lasting until late in the day. We usually get out about 5 or 6 those days depending on how difficult the dissection. Otherwise it's 8 or 9 am to 4 or 5 pm. It varies though and we get some afternoons off. It's a lot of work studying and attending class. Not everyone attends class, I tried skipping some this module and it didn't help me. I just ended up getting behind and making more B's than A's. However, all the second years tell us that first and second module are the most difficult first year, we might be past the worst of it. It is very interesting though, I really like the clinical correlations and most of the material. I'm enjoying it much more than pre-med. I'm participating in student government and I fly to see my fiancee every other month.

pretty much ditto here.

studying is the big one that people seem to care about, and that's all based on the grade you're gunning for and how effective your study times are. how much I study isn't how much you'll need to study. your own routine and efficiency will detrmine how much you need to study.

How is medical school? Very easy. It's like back in kindergarten. I always try to hook up with a hot chick in my mind.

How long do you study for? You don't have to study outside of classes.

How long are the classes and what kind of activites do you partake in. I pretty skip all the classes and I can study 30 minutes before a test to get an A. I party hard, smoke weed, and roll with my neggas in the hood.

Also how many classes do you have to attend in your first year. Just skip all the classes in medical school and you will be fine.

🙄

Med school is definitely one of the most interesting things I have been involved in, but also one of the most time consuming.

As far as classes and schedule goes it's just going to vary a lot among schools. Some use a traditional lecture curriculum where you may have some sort of lecture/lab all throughout the day, some are strictly PBL (Problem Based Learning) where you may have small group interaction a few times a week), still others may have an independent study setup where you there is minimal lecture/structured time.

I'm at a PBL school (there are many threads already talking about PBL in general), and with the exception of anatomy in the beginning, I was at school for "structured" class/small group only 2 hrs each day during the first two years. Granted the rest of the day I studied like it was my full time job but I enjoyed the flexibility of being able to study when and where I wanted during the middle of the day.

I'm fairly certain he's being sarcastic?
IDK if you are too I'm bad at reading that from time to time.

epic fail.

i facepalmed so hard while reading this thread that my arm has gone through my head, just like phineas gage with the railroad spike.

Seriously? You don't want to have class from 8-4? Do you realize that a shift at the hospital can last for well more than 8 hours. Also, when someone says that are in class 8-4, it probably means that they have three classes per day, 8-10, 10-12 and 1-4. Labs are going to be your longest period.

There are some school that are 8-12 straight, but they work on a different schedule and you would be focusing on one subject for 4 straight hours, instead of switching subjects.

As Aggie mentioned during anatomy we have lecture for 1-2 hours followed by 2-3 hours of lab... we started at 8 and were done by noon unless it was a clinical day (approx 2x a month of big group or small group meetings and 1 day of clinic)

Our next block is BCT (Biology of Cells and Tissues). During this time lectures will be from 8-12 but most days it is more like 8-11 or 9-12...

We have less lecture than a lot of medical schools- our professors give us the frame of the material and discuss concepts that can be hard to understand and then we do a lot of independent learning using their objectives.

I usually spend about 4-5 hours after lecture/lab studying each day but that goes up to as much as 12 hours a day the week before a test.

+200 internets for reference of excellence.
+500 for sharing my pain.

I'll try for a better one next time.
