I am an incoming D1 student at UIC and will try my best to isolate the pros from the cons.

For one, the school is in the west loop of Chicago so they have a great patient pool. I believe they altered the curriculum recently, so the program is year-round and I think you start pre-clinicals the summer going into your 3rd year. I didn't really get a chance to check out other school's facilities being that I only interviewed at one other school, but their patient software programs amazed me. You simply run your ID through a scanner, and it'll show you your appointments for the day as well as the patient information of the particular patient you are treating (this may be the norm for most dental schools though). There are tons of research opportunities available for all students since the school is so research oriented. Also, all the specialties are represented. In addition, UIC has a mentoring program that allows you to hook up with a specialist of your interest and shadow them to see if it's a field worth pursuing. This allows the student to actually get their feet wet without much commitment. And I must point out; the school is in the city of Chicago! It's a great place to live. Tons of nightlife, activities for all ages and all seasons.

On the other hand, the city is expensive. You can find decently-priced places in the west loop but make sure you're East of Ogden, and north of Roosevelt. West and South of those areas aren't the greatest. Winters in Chicago are brutal (if you don't already know), but if you're used to some sort of cold and wind, I would imagine it won't make too much difference (especially since it'll keep you inside and studying more). I'm not sure if you're out of state or not, but out of state tuition is abnormally high. I hear they accept roughly 10% out-of-staters, but in the past not many have committed. Whether the reason is tuition or not, I'm sure it played a role in their decision. I'm not exactly sure of the rule with declaring residency after the first year. That's something you'd have to investigate on your own.

I know there are a few other guys/gals on this forum planning on attending UIC, so I'm sure it's only a matter of time until they chime in. I hope this has helped a little and feel free to PM me if you have any more questions. I think their website is difficult to navigate, but try browsing through it to see if anything sparks your interest. Good luck!

Chicago is a great sports town - Sox, Cubs, Bears, Bulls. Weather can be unpredictable, cold one day and warm the next. Lots to do in the city - museums, shopping, Millenium Park, ect.

Per UIC's website, I don't think you can get in state tuition if you're from out of state.

pre-clinicals begin in your first semester. you start seeing patients the summer before D3 year.

there's plenty of safe housing west of ogden. western is more likely to be your cutoff, not ogden.

they accept more out-of-staters now. i don't believe you can declare residency after year 1.
