How is UTMB doing with the hurricane Harvey?

How did the hurricane affect the med students and your schedules? Did the hospitals evacuate? You guys go on a massive road-trip? Hope everyone is OK - just wanted to hear a student's perspective. (Apologies if there is another thread - I searched and couldn't find one.)

My friends at UtMB and McGovern haven't been going to class. I don't know if Baylor ever sent out a class cancellation, but a lot of my friends there are effectively stranded in their apartments so streaming lecture it is. I know that several of the Houston hospitals have had to evacuate patients, including some at Ben Taub in critical condition where flooding damaged the power supply, there's also a looming food shortage at Ben Taub, but hopefully the rains recede long enough to get supplies there.

UTMB classes and clinicals are down until next week. They pussyfooted for a while there but then just cancelled everything. The hospitals and some outpatient clinics are going but only essential employees are there. Galveston is half underwater. Most everyone left immediately but there's no way for anyone to get back to the island even if they wanted us to.

Houston hospitals are mostly ok. Like was said Ben Taub got effed but the med center just recently poured a couple million (billion?) dollars into making sure no hurricane would ever damage it again and that worked so none of those hospitals have damage they were just hard to get to for a couple days.

I know some people who are volunteering at shelters in Houston or doing collections for the shelters. Tbh it's kinda hard to know what to do besides stay safe and dry.

Yeah the drone video I saw of the Texas Medical Center didn't look as bad as it could have been yesterday. The entire system sits on the 500 year floodplain, so they're not entirely out of the woods. Right now all of my friends working there have outpatient positions for now, so they're not even bothering to try to get into work.

Apparently they were asking for volunteers to do mental health work at the shelters, which just sounds horrible.

UTMB MS2 here ... our classes have been cancelled since Friday 8/25, and start up again on Tuesday 9/5. We had a final and an OSCE scheduled within the dates that we've missed, so we're all kind of curious how the rescheduling is going to go!

There was some significant flooding up to 2nd story in some cases but is now resolved and everything seems pretty much back to normal. They are turning away volunteers since there are too many.

UTMB and nearby is not flooded, fully operational, electricity and such still on, some other parts of Galveston are flooded about 6 inches, and most students are having a mini-vacation. They originally were going to start classes back earlier last Wednesday, but there were several complaints about Houston being flooded. Houston got most of the hit in terms of flood damage, and I can't get back to UTMB until the Houston roads clear of flooding.
