I am in a situation where I am not able to apply to residency programs until after December 30, 2006. My reasons are many, and complicated.

My question is:

How late can we apply to residency programs, and expect a realistic successful match outcome?

Is it better to scramble, or even apply next year (match 2008), rather than apply on December 30, 2006 for the 2007 match?

Thank You.

You should check for yourself but I'm pretty sure that most programs have an application deadline (at least in IM) of mid-November or December 1. In that case, you won't be able to apply at all. There are a few places that have mid-December deadlines as well but I never saw one w/ a 12/30 deadline.

Best off to wait for next year or possibly scramble.

BE (now PE)

i know at least 10-20 IM programs with deadlines in Jan.

you should check each program individually about cut offs.

Doesn't garuntee you'll be selected, especially if its a more competitive program.

I know some of the family med programs in detroit have cut offs of somewhere in december or in january.

Unless you just have to have a spot, which I think you can get, I would wait till 2008 to have your best shot at landing in a residency of your choice.

If just want to be in a residency position, I would apply for the match this year in family and IM. Not sure the more competitive programs will still be downloading applications.

I met a guy who also applied early but didn't have his MSPE up until after Nov 1. He received all interviews prior to the release of that but once it finally got upped he received no more.

Have you thought about applying now? and if need be, withdraw later on?

I advice you to wait one year. Applying so late in the application process will put you at a statistical disadvantage! By this time, most applicants have already completed half their interviews. By December......only 30% interview invites are probably left from programs (the less competitive ones).

Sorry to tell you this....but its a very imp. part of your career to match into a good program.

I think the OP knows this, but it's his choice whether to match into a good prog vs just matching into any program

Hey Shah,

Why don't you stop acting like an authority from ERAS, or a residency program director.

You're a medical student just like most of us on these forums. Seen all the comments you put up on this forum and valuemd. Lead your own life and stop preaching to everyone that they should get into a good program, commenting to others they have below average board scores, blah blah blah.

We all know that, yes, we should get high scores on board exams and get into good residency programs. There's nothing wrong with giving help on forums, but to preach is pretty annoying.

What specialty are you trying for?

Thank you all for your valuble advice, and honesty.

I will try my best to apply earlier, although very unlikely. I guess I might have to wait until the next year's match.🙁

Thank you again.

General Surgery (or OB/GYN as a back-up) ANYWHERE.

But frankly, I am not very picky...I just want a job in medicine, and I am willing to go into any speciality (My LORs are all Surgical though😉 )

Since I am applying late, I am playing with the idea of doing a Prelim Sx internship first (during 2007-2008)...then apply for Cat. Sx in the 2008 match. This is my worst nightmare, but I do not think I have much of a choice.🙁

Thanks for asking.

Mr or Mrs IR:

You dont need to read my posts/preaching!

And by the way, I never told anyone they had below avg. scores...if they did...they already know it.

Oh and the whole deal about me being an "authority":
If you read the 40 page ERAS manual and information on program/NRMP websites...any monkey can become an expert! So instead of reading my posts....just get the information straight from the horses mouth instead! I know that the truth is sometimes hard to digest!

Since the deadline for General Surgery is November 1 (or October 15 at some places), it seems to me that applying after December would be a waste of money since its not likely you would get any interviews that late in the season and after the deadline.

You do have a choice and that is to sit out this year - do some research or something else medical. The option to do a Prelim year is not a bad one; not the best, but it does get your foot in the door and perhaps if you do well enough, you might be able to pick up one of the PGY2 categorical spots which are occasionally open. The main drawback to applying late is that you are essentially pulling yourself out of the race for a Categorical position - there are unlikely to be any available after the scramble. You might have matched somewhere into a Categorical position but you'll never know if you apply this year.
