So I'm going to be working overseas while I apply to medical schools. I'll be applying as early as possible, i.e. June/July.

If I'm one of the first applications in, and a school would like to interview me, is there a general guideline for when that will occur? Are they all more or less during the same time period? It would be nice if they were all within one month and I could book my flight home and knock them all out. Flying back to each interview individually from half way around the world is just too expensive for me to swing. Any ideas on what the timeline is like and if I could be able to swing this while living abroad?

I had the earliest interviews available at two schools and one was late August the other was early October. There is so much variability in interview dates that we can't give you an exact answer.

I received the interview invitations from August until December.

Four of the schools I got interviews allowed you to choose a date from a set list, but they were normally limited to a set two week period.

The others, you are at the mercy of the school. If they say show up in two weeks on a Tuesday then your chances of rescheduling are limited. One school only allowed rescheduling for important things and they specifically said the exceptions are childbirth or death of immediate family.

Earliest interviews are mid-to-late August (Pitt, UChicago, Michigan are notorious for early interview days). Most others are from September-February, depending on when you submit secondaries. Obviously, the earlier the better in most cases.

Once you start getting interviews you can try to schedule them close to eachother. Since you will be living abroad you could also send "in the area" e-mails to other schools that are in similar locations.

after secondaries?

1-9 months 😛

...but seriously

(I would say most interviews are mid sept-early dec, invites can go out from 1-2 months before the date)

edit: there is also a batch of interviews which seem to go out to stragglers in Jan-Feb (invites in early jan), then it slows down significantly.
