How long after the interview do you wait before sending a thank-you email? And how long would you wait to send a letter of intent post-interview to your top choice school?

If you’re going to do it, do it within 48 hours. For both. At many schools committee may meet a day or two after interview. If you send LOI after that it may not factor in

But I would wait maybe 8 hours before sending it. Too soon after is cringeworthy

I sent mine within a couple of hours of the interviews, and made sure I referenced bits from the specific interview, and established in no uncertain terms that they are my top choice and why. I got replies from both of them straight away, which was encouraging. Who knows if this turns into an A, or they were just being nice...

I hope your thank you letter was actually sincere and not a means of trying to get an edge over other applicants…

Between me and the interviewers who met me, we had enough context in which to read the letter and understand its intention, but I can see how you might judge otherwise knowing nothing about me or my interviews 🙂

Hi there! It is always a good idea to consider sending a thank-you email 1 to 3 days after your interview. Note that this is merely an extension of good will; it will not sway the committee’s decision. If you choose to send one, your thank-you email should be written to the admissions committee, not individual interviewers. Address the email to the Dean of Admissions and either send it to the Dean directly or send it to the administrative assistant you have been communicating with thus far. As for your second question, the best time to send the letter of intent is about a month after your interview, especially if you have been waitlisted at your top choice school. If you are interviewing at multiple schools, you may want to wait until you have completed a few of your interviews and considered all the options available to you. Hope this helps and best of luck!

I did mine the same day, but I think the general rule is within 48hrs. As for a letter of intent I would personally wait 4-6 weeks.

I sent it within a few hours of interview out of habit. I come from a business background and have conducted interviews there - we would often discuss candidates same-day so if your email did not reach me before then it was a non-factor. It is my impression that Adcom's could meet much later so you probably have more leeway in that regard, but my personal opinion is doing it as early as you feel comfortable does no harm.
