How long did it take you to realize you should apply ophtho?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm an atypical case, as I entered med school to do ophthalmology and retina, in particular. Most schools don't give you good exposure to ophthalmology, so the onus is on you to investigate the field. If you haven't already, I would contact some local docs and try to set up some shadowing, so you can get an idea of what a typical day is like. Don't just wait for the rotation. I started shadowing my first year just to confirm my interest.

We also only got 1 week of ophtho, and mine was the last week of 3rd year. So be proactive. When youre on that chill outpatient pysch rotation, check out early and go hang out with the ophtho residents in clinic. If they see youve got a real interest, theyll show you some cool stuff, and you can get some practice using the equipment. I started doing this about November of my 3rd year, so I basically had already decided to go for it by the time my "official" ophtho rotation for MS3 came around.
