So I'm about to begin year 1 in a couple weeks and am just curious as to how much time per day most dental students will study outside of class. In my pre-dent club I heard a couple speakers say that they usually study until around 11:00 PM which leaves virtually no time for anything else.

I'm in my third year now, and I don't study much. Probably 2 hours a night, if that.

When I was in first year, I studied nearly every night until 10:00 or 11:00pm, Monday-Thursday. I didn't study on Friday nights. I studied until about 3:00pm on Saturdays, then only after about 5:00pm on most Sundays. During second year, I studied less, but I had many more lab projects that kept me busy, especially setting denture teeth and surveying RPD's. Those replaced some of the study hours, but I could watch football or something while I worked on those.

4th year: zero 😀

During 1st year, I'd come home around 5-6pm (if I had no lab work to do) and study from 7:30 to about 11:30 every night. I expect that to increase during my 2nd year. 😱

Here was my schedule for the first 2 years. Take into consideration that I was a gunner who wanted to specialize:

Be at school and in my seat for lecture by 8:00. There were a few scattered 7am classes. Sit in class until either 2pm or 5pm. If it was 2pm it was because we went to the lab until 5pm. So it was 5pm either way. After 5, I would stay in the lab to finish whatever work I was doing, because there was always practicing and extra work. When I left the lab i would go study in the library until it closed at 11pm. Then I would go home to give the wife the pickle-tickle, go to sleep, and do it all over again the next day.

I would usually sleep later on weekends and show up at the library when they opened at 9am. Then I would study until 9pm. 12 hours straight was definately my max because I started going cross-eyed after that. Then I would go home, kick the dog, drink a beer or four, and go to sleep. And repeat.

No pickle-tickle on the weekends? What a jip!

wow, i'm a 3rd year at USC and didn't study at all except for the weekend before midterms and final exams. And studied for 10-12 hours a day for 2 months straight before NBDE part I. since 3rd year is basically all clinical, i plan on studying less than my first year.

There should be a "Study???" option.

2-3 years 😀

Yeah, I guess I was just thinking about years 1 and 2 and I didn't really think it would be possible to get through them without studying.

Wow, what a load. If you don't mind me asking, how were your grades for these first two years? Do you still want to specialize?

I hope he still does, considering he's a senior OMS resident. 😉

Not senior, but I'm still on the totem-pole....somewhere around that part of the totem-pole that holds it in the ground. It's real dark down here...

My grades were good enough to be competitive, but I wasn't #1. It seems like I've always had to work harder than others to achieve the same results, so there were a few others who worked less hard but did better. I think being a hard-working dumba@@ like myself will get you further (?farther?) than being a lazy genius.

Hey I have read some of your posts and you sure like to smart people off alot. how is it that you were able to become a moderator here?

Sometimes you even smart off the other moderators. Thats terribly unprofessional and makes me think very bad of you indiana folk.

I would bet money that you are a short guy. I am tall and everytime I am around people like you they are uncomfortable and say things to draw attention to them. Are you a 'look at me' person?

I bet you are. Your almost a dentist, quit being a juvenille.

See, a couple weeks ago I'd've had the freedom to respond to this the way I'd really like to. 😉

As it is, feel free to PM me any specific concerns you have about the job I'm doing, but clogging unrelated threads isn't the way to go.

Luckily the rest of us can smart people off to our heart's content

Yea the freedom to sit behind a computer screen and belittle people is a power I would hate to lose.

But then I am not a little guy with a big temper. I guess I am glad you are a moderator now, maybe it will shut you up.

I won't pm you, its a waste of time, I can just tell that I don't like you much.

And that will get you a warning, so here it is: comments that degrade other users are unacceptable. Please abide by the TOS that you've agreed to.

oh wow.. i only studied 1 to 2 hours the most, and prolly every other day!

I'm a year one right now.. I barely study 4 hours a week so far..if that much.

I suspect it is going to go up to about 1.5 -2 hrs a day according to when I reach home(some nights I finish @ 8pm), especallly near exams.

I thought this was interesting in comparison to the recent thread of this topic. It seems like a majority of the, non-gunners, study from 0-4 hrs/night, or so.

Reo, I'm telling you, you're pretty good at pulling up these old threads. When I read the OP saying that he is going to start D1 in a couple of weeks, I was like "which dental school is that?" (I obviously noticed the date of the post later)

seriously man, you're a search function ninja.

dude, posting your DAT/GPA scores in your signature is a bit tacky. I'm sure you'll be the same guy who pump-fists in the hallway and screams 'I'm the MAN!' after every exam score is posted in dental school. A little modesty and anonymity goes a long way in dental school and in life!

hahaha it's funny 'cause it's true! hahahaha

Did I say something to upset you with my light hearted jab at Reo, or are you just being an ass because you can? People can just as soon click the predents link to see the same information, what make it harder for them? SDN is for student doctors, and any information helps.

But way to jump wayyy far away to some conclusion to pass judgement on someone you know absolutely nothing about. Yeah, I'm the tacky one. And I'm not a gunner. You think someone with a 3.58 in undergrad is going to go yelling "Im the man!" after getting an exam grade back?

Better to keep your mouth shut and have everything think you're a douche than open your mouth and prove it.

Hey, my old poll! I finally voted on it. Ah, the memories.

Did you vote 1 or less? 😉

I still think it could use the "study???" option!

 Totally agree with you now! I did choose 1 or less because on most days I didn't study at all. First and second years I would study 3 or 4 hours the night before a big quiz and all week right before/during midterms and finals. Averaged out it was maybe one hour per day.

The funny thing is the speaker who made me wonder about this back when I was a pre-dent claimed that he studied from 5:00 to 11:00 every single weekday for the first two years. He didn't specialize but he was at or near the top of his class. To each his own!
