I am going to be listed as an author on a paper that will hopefully be submitted in the next month or two. The PI is fairly certain that it will be accepted. I know there are a lot of factors that go into determining how long it will take for acceptance like the number of revisions and the journal, but if it is submitted at the end of march, is there any chance that it will be accepted before I submit my primary in june?

Too many factors to say for certain. Some journals require reviewers to respond in two weeks (I believe that's the most expeditious) so it might take at least 2-3 weeks (assuming that it takes a week to get it assigned out to reviewers).

Could be a really long time depending on the reviewers/journal.

Getting accepted quickly isn't the norm in my experience. I would expect at least a few months; in a worst case scenario (i.e., reviewers ask you to repeat or do additional experiments), a year or so. It really just depends on the journal and even the reviewer. At a minimum, though, you'll probably have to do a couple of rounds of changes, which obviously takes some time.

In my experience, approximately 6 months seems to be the norm for peer-reviewed journals (normally after two reviews because the first review will come back as either rejected and resubmit after making substantial changes or accepted pending revisions; it is really rare to get accepted outright on the first shot though). But of course, that length depends on the quality of your pub and how fast your lab acts to fix the pub once it receives feedback from the journal. If you look at some journal articles, they will even say when they received the pub and when it was accepted at the very end of the paper, which gives you an idea of how long the process takes for certain journals.

If your paper is being submitted only two months before early June, I don't think it'll be likely that you'll get the pub accepted before then. But there is a small chance that it could.

It depends who you're submitting to also. A friend of mine submitted to some small ophtho journal and it got acceptrd within 1 month.

OK so on a related note, is submitting without any publications and then sending an update in August or September after it is accepted going to put me at any real disadvantage compared to people who were able to list publications on their primaries at research heavy schools?

It usually takes a couple months to multiple months. I was in a similar situation and listed papers on AMCAS with something like "submitted with acceptance pending"
in the description. It was accepted around the time IIs started coming in and I discussed the papers during interviews in greater detail.

It could take longer if its a basic science paper and reviewers suggest more experiments as well.

3.8, taking the mcat in a month and got a 34 on my first aamc, solid ecs but they probably aren't remarkable, and I have very good relationships with my lor writers so I expect they'll be good.

Since the rest of your app looks to be competitive I don't have an answer. I believe you can put pending publications on AMCAS though.

It has taken me months for some reason. I mean even after I have resubmitted addressing reviewer comments there was still galley proofs and all that. I dunno hopefully it goes much quicker for you!

I just listed that I had a manuscript submitted pending reviewer comments; it's less compelling but it was the truth.
