How long does it take for Medicare provider ID?

Dear all,

I am a 3rd year resident in IM. I have many offers for jobs this July but still hesitate. One of medical director advises me to get my independent Medicare provider ID so I can join his group as an independent contractor (very flexible work and schedule, and good income, and you can decide how many patient I want to take care of, most patients have Medicare, and I have to bill myself).

I heard that Medicare provider ID application may take so long for new physician. anyone who has experience please advise.
