How long does it take to become a pharmD?
6 years?
4 for undergraduate and 2 for pharmacy school?

depending on the pre-pharm reqs per school it's usually
2-3 undergrad 4 pharmacy
or
4 undergrade w/degree +4 pharmacy

PharmD is usually 3-year or 4-year programs. Some do two years of undergraduate to finish the pre-requisites and go straight into PharmD program without achieving a bachelor's degree.

Can't you get you bachelors in 3 years w/o summer breaks?
Then go to pharmacy school

lol, that depends. I've seen people get their bachelors degree in 2 years. and there are people who need 5+ years to get their bachelors.

oh man
I don't want to be studing past age 27 lol

What about regular pharmacy?
How long?

what do you mean by regular pharmacy?
if you want to be a pharmacist you need a PharmD.
there is no longer just a bachelors in pharmacy

Depends, if you just want to get a pharmD and nothing else, it can take up to 6 years (2 pre-req +4 professional years). If you want to pursue a BS in another field so that you can try out other programs like PhD to do research etc, then 8 years (4 years undergrad + 4 years) to get both degrees.

So going on what the posters above have been saying, you don't necessarily have to be 27 years old when you finish. Assuming you are 18 upon high school graduation, you can do 2 years of prerequisites and 3 years of pharmacy school. So you will be 23 years old at the bare minimum (24 years old if you choose a 4 year program).

Pharmacy education can be short compared to, say medicine, which usually takes 8 straight years of college then additional years for residency. So even if you are 27 years old when you graduate...it's still not a bad deal since you're earning a professional Doctorate degree and a 6 figure income.

Check out the FAQ thread at the top of this forum.

welll....
according to my calculations.... assuming u dont get held back.....

that's 3 years of Jr. High, 4 years of high school.... 2-4 years of undergrad... 4 years of pharm school.... so that is a total of 13-15 years (unless you count elementary, preschool, and kindergarden, which in case would be an additional 7 years).

of course, you can always start your own pharmacy program and bypass this whole process. With the way pharmacy schools have sporadically been popping up out of nowhere in the past decade, i wouldnt be surprised if you made such feat. I vote for South Harmon Institute of Technology SOP, if need a confident name.

Is acceptance just a click away?

lol I wish it was like that.

I'm lucky though..I started college at 16, i'm 19 now I just applied and got accepted on my first try! =) so 3 years plus 3 more at the pharmacy school I got accepted to (USN) = 6 years!

That's great! I wish I was that focused at 16! heck, I remember when I was 19....NOBODY could have helped me get my act together at that age! It was at 21 that I got hit with some sense and cleaned up my life and got back into school. I'm 25 now and though I'm still 'young' (sort of), I wish I didn't have to make so many mistakes to become the person that I am today lol.

So for me: 18-21 years old: Quit school + ran amuck
21-25 years old: Undergrad
25-28 Years old: USN COP (accepted for Fall 2009)

Total: 10 years w/break
7 years no break

😀

Licensed Pharmacist by the age of 22, not too shabby. Makes me feel old.

I have a friend who went to college at 18 and started a medical residency in pediatrics at the age of 23.

You must have read the Yahoo! Article that makes pharmacy school sound so easy. Its usually 4 undergrad 4 Pharm school.

4+4 years after high school is more typical now, especially for the higher ranking/better known schools. I think ohio state, ranked #5, was the first to require a 4 years undergrad degree for admission back in 2006/2007. I think having an undergrad degree give you a big advantage over the non-degree holders now with most schools. But if you are good, you can still get in with just a pre-pharm, it's just harder than it used to be.

The higher demand for qualification is a good thing for the profession, as it raises the status over time. But what what really bothers me isn't the longer times to finish, but the MUCH higher cost than it used to be. My preceptors who graduated in 2006, were able to finish pharmacy school less than $40K in loans, the same school now costs me almost $80K when all said and done in 2010. My first year was classified as an out of state, $27K, two years later the new out of state P1 now is paying $31K. WTF?! It's going up 9% every year, and I don't see where all that extra money is going! The professors aren't getting 9% raises for sure.

Yep, 5 years is the bare minimum, if you come in knowing exactly what you want, get in on the first try, and choose a 3 year accelerated program.

Most of us get sidetracked, or choose to live life a little.

Me, I got by bachelor's, and because I was having too much fun taking all sorts of classes, still had a few to take to qualify for pharmacy school admissions, so I had a year of post-bac work and pharmacy work. Now I am enrolled in a 4 year program. So 9 years, start to finish, and I will be finished precisely at the age of 27, which I don't think is half bad. I've had very worthwhile life experiences along the way.

4 years for a BS in Pharmacy (no longer offer in the USA though)
2+3 or 5 years if you go to UoP or if you choose a 3 year pharmD program.
2+4 or 6 years if you know you want to be a pharmacist since the begining of time
4+3 or 7 years...what I am hoping for if I get into South! (*fingers crossed*)
4+4 or 8 years if you are like ME and had NO idea that you wanted to become a pharmacist until NOW.

If you know you want to be a pharmacist 5 years is your best bet now or go to some other country and get a BS in 4 years.

11 years for me...

5yrs for BS in biochem
2yrs break
4yrs pharm school

Well! Don't feel bad because I'm 25 years old now too. I was a follower, people told me what to do then I followed them. So this is what happened to me
18-24--Undergrad w 1 yr co-op and figured is not right field for me
24-25--practical nursing, figured- is nice but can't be a nurse 4 rest of my life
Future
25--28-- work as a nurse for 1.5 yr & get my pharm Tec License and work for 1.5 yr at the same time upgrade for the courses grade
28-------hope to get in
Technically~~28
Total yr of studying 10 yrs + 4 yrs of pharmD(if I get accepted) then would be =14 yrs....😱
So I will be 31 or 32 when I finished the program

don't feel bad. Not every one know that they want to be a pharmacist. I didn't even consider it until my BS degree hit the glass ceiling at work. So often it's because people don't think pharmacy when talking about health care.

Besides, some work experience can really help you to stand out from other applicants, also make you look mature than fresh-faced 20 year old, (even if you are not). ;P

I hadn't even remotely considered it until about a year ago but I don't regret my choices along the way since they've led to great opportunities.

This is my first post on here, and I hope I'm doing this right. Hello, everyone! Mine went something like this and hopefully works out:
16-18>Associate's in Liberal Arts (cause I didn't know what I wanted to do!)
18-22>Took random classes, traveled to other states, had a baby with fiance, and thought I had graduated but I didn't realize I had to apply for graduation (a side effect of homeschooling!)
22-25>graduate with BA in Biology and/or prerequisites done with Pharm Tech experience and License, work until PharmD program
25-28/29>PharmD program
I'll be 29 with 11 years of school...Oh, joy!

How about 13? 4 years for BA in English, 3 years off, 2 years of science classes, 4 years pharm school. Probably add a year of residency on the end there, too...

Ayyy, not this...

16 - Graduate high school, enter Stanford undergrad.
19/20 - Graduate with BA
21 - Go to UC Davis
23 - Graduate with yet another Bachelor's
23 - Join the military
27 - Leave the military after serving overseas twice
27 - Fall in love with pharmacology and... here I am today.

So... 11 years for me I guess too before counting Pharm. school.

Wow 16 at Stanford?? I wish I was that smart back in high school. 🙂 I think the only thing I care about back then is what should I wear and who's house I will be at after school!

Here is my timeline

18-graduate from high school. Went to UNC-Charlotte.
22-graduate from UNC-Charlotte with a BA/rejected from UNC and Harvard Dental school. REALLLLY fu*cking piss me off b/c my DAT was stellar didn't understand why I wasn't accepted to Harvard or UNC. Reapply to MORE than just two dental schools and got accepted to FOUR dental schools the second time around.
23-went to Columbia dental for a semester. Drop OUT after 2 months.
24- Apply to pharmacy school. (NEAR DEADLINE)
24- ACCEPTED TO MERCER PHARMACY! (present!)
28- GRADUATE from MERECER PHARMACY! (future)

WOW TEN YEARS FOR ME!!!

If I was a economical person I would have gone thru the 2+4 route and graduated when I was 24!! too bad I am the type to waste/money time!

Really there is little cognitive difference between a 16 and 18 yearold so intellect has nothing to do with it (An equally well-read 16 yearold will meet an equal 18 yearold in all aspects cognitively), it's the emotional component that is key. I rushed it (Or should I say, my parents rushed me into it) and thus, ended up with an education in a field I was only mildly interested in. Thankfully the Pharmacology phairies phound me and delivered me phrom the evil!

i envy you gj, high school was such a waste of time

I think losing out on as much HS as I did, I was not up to the task of entering the "real world" emotionally... but the Army fixed that up real fast for me.

If I had a child, I'm not sure I'd rush him through HS like I was rushed through, regardless of his or her intellect.

I am offering a 6 week online course to a farm-d degree. Please send $39.95 to. . .

It's really just that easy!

  • One should have to pass the Matric examination with science subjects.
  • One should have to pass Higher degree in either chemistry or biology which is must require.
  • One should have to get the Four-year master degree in the pharmacy.
  • One should have one-year practical training is a must needed.
  • After all above steps, one must have to pass the registration examination conducted by the Govt.
