I'm really curious about this. A good friend who goes to a rather top school told me she thinks she has a very long summer because it's 10 weeks--apparently her friends at other schools have less. On the other hand, my school (state school) gets 14 weeks, which seems like a lot to me. When I found out that many schools have shorter summers, I almost felt cheated educationally (I do think we could use more time covering certain topics, and considering our high tuition, really couldn't they use that time to actually teach us something?).

edited to add: I also think this may be a consideration in the threads discussing whether to study between M1 and M2. If you only have 8 weeks, I can see why you might not bother. But not studying at all for 14 weeks seems a bit absurd to me!

you need to spend your breaks drinking. books will be waiting when you get back. you only get a few more summer breaks you better relax. it feels soooooooooooo good 🙂

Our school has about 6 1/2 weeks. It may seem short, but it's not like I'm going to have the money to go on a 3 month vacation anyway. I'll probably just end up stuck in a lab 😉

Three weeks. No summer vacations in the real world, folks.

depends on your real world...I know a lot of teachers who get summer vacation 🙂
(edit to add: and not only primary teachers; I saw one of my professor's--my favorite actually!--at the store today, looking very tanned and relaxed lol...he's retired from research and just teaches, so yes, it's his summer break too!)

also, this is my first summer vacation in...7? years
And my last ever, I assume.

There are plenty of docs in large (often academic) groups that get 6 weeks vacation per year. There is still some summer vacation potential in your future.

I know a lot of Gas guys that have 10 weeks vacation/yr.

no - it is fantabulous

16 weeks?! Now I'm jealous.

We get 12 weeks off. I'm doing 9 weeks in a lab, editing an old manuscript I've been waiting to publish, and writing a short review paper. Then.... 1 week in Mexico. 1 week at "The Shore" (Jersey-style) on the East Coast. 5 days backpacking the Sierras. Weekend trips to: LA, Vegas, Napa Valley, Tahoe.

Also, I have vowed to not study at all. AT ALL. It's sweet. Sometimes I wish it would never end 😉 Makes me contemplate taking that 5th research year just for the relaxation compared to med school.

my school gets 10 weeks. i felt bad thinking it was too short a time to do anything productive like submit a paper for publishing.
where i'm doing research now, canadian students have a 4 month vacation! and get to be way more involved in research

We get 8 weeks. Can't believe summer is already halfway over 🙁 So much left to do!

9 weeks. Just long enough to make it hard to get back into the swing of studying

I swear someone just made a thread about this last month or something.

Between M1 and M2 we get two weeks of leave and the rest is required summer activities.
