How long of a break between graduation and residency?

Typically, how long is the break between med school graduation and the beginning of a residency program? (assuming there is a break)

Does it depend on when the school's session ends and when a program begins or there a standard break time across the nation?

It depends. There is no one "graduation date" across the country.

I would say that generally graduation dates are beginning of May until about Labor Day weekend.

Official residency start date is July 1. Figure about 1-2 weeks of orientation before July 1 depending on the program.

That being said, most students in my class were done at least 2-3 weeks (if not more) before graduation. After finishing my graduation requirements I had about 12 weeks of time off before residency started. How early you finish is based on how much vacation time you took during M3/4 years & if you want to take it at the end (you should b/c you will never get that time again).

Most residency programs start on July 1st but their orientation usually start on June 15th so depending on when graduation is for you, it could be between 2 weeks to a month.

me too... I know some people who started residency orientation the week after graduation.

I'd also say that lots of people scheduled May (and even part of April) as free time. I personally took some time off in May, my wife and I went to Disney (and our Credit card balance reflects that too 😱)

I think for our school it is 5 weeks between graduation and start of residency. It really depends on the school and where you end up going for residency.
