Hello,

I wondered if a 3.4 undergrad GPA, a 3.0 grad GPA (law school--I hated every second of it and had no motivation to study) and a 3.5 post-bacc science GPA is too low for med school. I have not taken the MCAT yet. I have nothing less than a B in my post-bacc pre-med pre-reqs. Should I be concerned and trying desperately to raise the post-bacc science GPA or do you think it's ok? I just want to get into one allopathic school--any one will do. I think the rest of my application will be very appealing to adcoms (i.e. unusual EC's, etc.) I really only want to apply once, but for fall '05 I'll only be applying to the 7 med schools in Chicago for family reasons.

Thanks,

Tofurkey

Hi Tofurkey,

I don't think that's too low at all. Take the MCAT, and then apply! See what happens. Good luck! 🙂

I dont know much about the Chicago schools but your GPAs are good enough, but not the best. Do as well as you possibly can in your post-bacc classes. Your application is much more than your GPA however. ECs, LORs, and the almighty MCAT are equally important. COMs may have a problem with the fact that you quit law school. I think you should have extensive healthcare experiences to couter the fact that quit law school. This will show them that you have an idea of what being a doctor is and that you are serious about becoming one.

Hello,

Thanks for your responses. To clarify--I finished law school--I have my J.D. diploma hanging on my wall--I just hated every second of it while I was there, thus only the 3.0 GPA.

Thanks,

Tofurkey

Now that i have read your post again I don't know why I assumed you quit. Anyway, hell of a job on getting that JD. I know I could not have done it. I think this changes things however, with the JD and the pretty good GPAs you should get multiple accepts to your schools. But, you'll still need a good MCAT score. Good luck, MWI

Tofurkey your stats look good. All they can do is say no. Hopefully they will not reject you, but if they do you have an oppurtunity to ask what can make you a stronger candidate.

your GPA is fine - your law school grades probably will count for very little as they have no relation to medical courses. if you get maybe a 30 or even a little lower, that's enough to get you over the hump. after that, I'd rely on all the other aspects of your app.

they might view the degree-accumulation as indecisiveness. So think about your reasons for JD-------->MD
