How many interviews is everyone planning on going on. I am looking at about 10-12 but wondering if this is too little or excessive. What are everyones plans?

I am going to do 8 interviews. The thought of this makes me a little nervous as many are doing 10-12, but many of the Anesthesiologists I've talked with say that 6-10 is good enough. I am interested what others on this board are doing.

right now i am doing 10 anesthesia (and 4 prelims) but i would really like to get that down to 5-6. i am really considering hacking a few in the immediate future because i don't think the problem lies in matching. I think the problem lies in the fact that i would like to see as many programs as I can to find the best fit in terms of geographic location/ types of people there as well as the slight differences that might exist between programs.

interviewing at 8 ANES total so far, may add 1 or subtract 1. Planning on going to 3 prelims for sure, still waiting for offers.

jus wonderin.. u guys think 3-4 prelims is enough? i was gonna go to at least 6-8... its hard to get a feel on how competitive prelim med is.. and i really dont wanna match but not into a prelim spot and have to scramble

I would say that you should shoot for 10 (+/- 2), depending on how competitive you are as an applicant. Now, I did not say that depends upon how high your numbers are! Esp when applying to residencies, it is no longer simply a game of numbers...but we can discourse on that in another thread. In all, for most folks, around 10 is reasonable, assuming you applied to a set of programs for which you are competitive, and that will be about as much as most folks can afford to travel to anyhow. It gets damned expensive &, as I understand it, programs are not paying for nearly as much stuff (hotel & airfare) as they did when I applied 2 years ago.

Prelim years - again, predicated on applying to programs that you are competitive for - I would say 3 to 5 would be more than sufficient. To save on $$, I only agreed to interview for prelim years at places I had already secured anesth interviews. With a family, I was not willing to move somewhere for 1 year only to pick up & move again.

Currently at 11 anesthesia, 4 transitional and 5 prelim-medicine. Hoping to add some transitional's in the next week, but I think time is running out.
