I'm in the process of ranking the programs I've interviewed at, not finished yet, but I've counted the number of spots available (categorical and advanced at programs I plan to rank) and it comes out to 98 at 7 places. It doesn't sound like a lot since most programs interview 100-150, that's 800-1000 applicants (lots of overlapping of course). Just wondering how many other people are planning to rank and the sum of spots available at those places.

I am a DO student from NYCOM......I will be ranking 11 programs for CA1 yr and 2 programs (DO traditional rotating internships) for PGY1 yr......went on 11 anesthesia interviews (got about 20 or so invites but didn't schedule about 7 of them, and cancelled 2 that were previously scheduled....U of Maryland and Dartmouth).......I am hoping that should be enough.......

Even "superstar" programs that are highly sought after and with lots of spots have to go midway down their list in order to fill (word is UCSF has to go down their list anywhere from their 40-50th slot just to fill their program). That's why so many programs end up interviewing so many candidates. Just remember that basically 85% of people match in their top 3 programs and ~97%+ match into one of their top 5. That being said, a list of 7-9 programs should be sufficient to ensure matching.

although i don't anticipate this happening, I feel as though once I go below my top 5 programs, i'd rather just do my internship and try to slip into an open spot next year. i'd rather not get stuck somewhere that i hate.

I'm going to rank all of them, because it's an amount that I won't get charged extra. I'm waffling around with my top 5, but I could end up anywhere and be happy. I've interviewed at what (surprisingly) turned out to be a few crap programs, but I'll probably still rank them... just very low. Someone once said to me, "The program you end up at is the best program for you." I've taken that to heart, and that's the attitude I'll have going into it. Not to say I don't want to end-up at #1, but I'll make the best of it no matter where I land.

That's a good attitude and the same one I take.

Just a warning, that might not be a great idea. I know a intern now who didnt rank alot of programs he intervewed with last year...didnt match for anesthesia....now panicking because they were not able to "silp in somewhere" outside of the match and was only offered 2 interviews in the match.. If i were you i would rank all programs you'd be willing to go to not just your top 5....

If you don't really like a program and don't think you'll be happy there I think it is a bad idea to rank it. You never know what programs won't fill and how many spots will be available in the scramble and where they will be available. You may be able to pick up a spot in the scramble that you might not have gotten otherwise. Of course, that is a lot less likely, but certainly possible. There were a lot of spots open for anesthesia last year after the match.

My policy was to just not interview at places where I didn't think I'd be happy, so I feel pretty comfortable ranking pretty much all the programs where I interviewed.

Good luck everyone. The match has ruined my sleep for long enough. Maybe I'll get in some good nights after match day and before internship starts.

I agree. and I also am ranking all 11 programs I interviewed at, because none of them were so bad that I would rather match NO WHERE than there...even my last choice. I just don't want to take the chance of not matching, having to scramble into some random program that I know nothing about...or even worse...having to scramble into MEDICINE 🙁 I would rather be at my 11th choice than no where!
