So how many A's did you guys have in your organic chemistry I class? The class I'm taking next semester has 10 A's out of 150 students. How is that? Good, bad, regular?

Thanks

I think that's a little low. But usually, the profs don't stick to what they say initially and end up giving more A's. Don't worry about it too much, just work hard to get the A!

Mine has a very large number of As (proportionally) because it's an honors organic chem class with fewer than 30 people (we have ~10 As, no curve). But in the regular organic class, I think about 10-15% of the class gets As.

Very few in my first ochem class a more realistic amount in my second. My class breakdown was similar to the one quoted by the op except the class is smaller. Also they don't curve up to A, you must earn it, so there are very few of them.

Are you counting A - and A's? 15 - 20% combined A's and A-'s I'd agree with as normal but not for solid A's. That would be a very easy school. 10 out of 150 is a little tight but still within reason.

Hmmm 10 As for 150 seems a tad low, unless they were A+s, then I'd say it's about average 🙂.

i think it was usually the top 10-15% of the class. i like how the averages on the midterms were around a 45-50% and A cut off ranges were around 75-80%.

At UC Davis, there are anywhere from 5% of the class getting A's to around 20 percent of the class getting A's for the first quarter of OChem depending on the teacher. The average is about 12 percent of the class. This is all from the thecampusbuddy.com which has grade distributions for a lot of the California schools.

13.5% got either an A or A+ in my Organic I class last semester out of about 180. Mean GPA was 2.4 for the class. Some Bs, but quite a few C/D/F. He curved the class, I think an 84% or 85% was an A.

Organic is one of those classes where you either are good at it or you arent. It can make for some pretty crazy curves.

haha I've never heard of an organic class that wasn't curved. A 51% was an A in my class. 😱

Not sure if my class was curved...i think it was kind of unofficial and if the prof got the impression that you understood things or your grades were steadily improving he bumped you up a grade. That said, i have no clue how many people got As in my class, but grades varied from 50 to 99 like a mo fcuker.

69 A's in my organic chemistry class.

The high percentage of A's in some classes might explain why a number of people are posting that Organic really wasn't that hard. If a third of the class got A's they're probably right, it wasn't hard in that school. If only 1 out of 10 get solid A's that means it isn't easy or you have to work hard for your A because at least half of the class is trying hard to get the best grade they can which means you have to beat all of them.

BTW what school has an A+ in anything? Is that just a joke I hope? What would an A- and A be with respect to GPA if an A+ = 4.0?

there are two.

if your figures exclude A-'s then it doesn't seem too bad. We had top 16% get A's and A-'s. Although some classes' harsh grading criteria took a toll on my gpa, I'm a fan of stringent science programs. It gives your school credibility in the eyes of adcoms.

They are just an ego booster type of thing. In a standard 150 kid lecture, probably 1 or 2 get an A+. Means nothing for your GPA, still a 4.0. But it means you absolutely aced the class.

Your class sucked. 30% of the people in my class got A's. I have to retake Orgo because I missed a midterm though.

So the average was like a 25%? Jeez, what kind of exams do you have to take to not be able to not get 3/4s of the points and still be average????

Never bothered to check how many A's were given. I just knew that if you got A's on the tests, and aced the ACS, you got an A in the class

4 A's outa 65 student class, 28 failed lawls.

1 A. Mine. 😀

I would highly suggest you look up your teacher options on www.ratemyprofessor.com.

I didn't and just got really lucky...My orgo teacher was amazing. I don't remember the exact stats, but for orgo 1 we probably had around 20 A's for 150 people. Typical test average was around a 70, give or take.

To the person who said A's were in the 50's 😱: I pity you. If you read the teaching literature, this will tell you that that teacher CANNOT write a test to save their life and should NOT be teaching.

Orgo I: 30 in the A range out of 200 (~decent I'd say)

Orgo II: 5-6 out of 120 😱 (Hardcore prof.!!!)

In my small regional college, one professor teaches Org 1 and the One teaches Org 2. Organic 1 had 4 A's out of 100 students and I barely got one. Organic 2 right now has NO A's and barely any B's. Tests are rediculous, if you forget to label one charge on a mechanism thats worth 10 points, you lose the whole 10 points.

-7.

Not only did nobody get A's, but the profs would actually take away your A's in other classes.

10 A's in a 150 student class is very low, but it happens when you have profs who are really stingy with grades. I had a similar class where a class of 60 students left with 4 A/A-'s. It probably means hes putting the A- cutoff line at 2 standard deviations above the mean.

My orgo class had around 20% A's which is normal to high. But most of my science classes generally range around 10-15%, with higher level courses generally being more lenient in terms of grade distribution.

Haha, reminds me of my first semester Orgo teacher. I was doing really well in there, so I didn't know what people were complaining about, but, that was until I screwed up. We had to draw the complete mechanism for an SN2 reaction, and, in order to get the inverted configuration properly I'd always draw it with the original leaving group on and then replace it. I forgot to replace it, and everything else was perfect. every electron movement, the nucleophile , the transition state, the inversion, etc. I missed 20/25 pts for that! 😱

He also loved to staple drop slips to people's first exams. Ha, ha, ha. C average was 50%, but A was 85%. 1/2 the class fails or drops.

my school doesn't have a +/- system. it's just A, B, C...etc.

i think there were ~8 As of like 40 some ppl. i just know 87%+ was an A, 75-87% was B, and below that was just pitiful on your part haha. i got Bs both times...i was lazy. woops!

Ochem II. 2 A's out of a class of 60. I was told my class was exceptionally dumb. 🙁

My school has 5 for like 100 kids no joke.

I am an honors O-chem II class right now with only about 20 people. Last semester we started off with about 42 students. After everyone bombed the first test(50% was the average), a lot of people decided to drop and take the regular course. Of course, since it's the honors class, the class was curved in the end. I got a 160/200(Thought I was going to get a B) on the final and ended up with a 98%. About 1/3 of the kids of the class got A's.

This semester is much different. 91% is an A and it's not curved. I only know 1 person(out of 20) who has an A and another person who has an A-. It's probably going to be curved though.

BTW, did anyone find O-chem II easier than I? I liked organic II a lot more because it was based more on organic chemistry than all the diffucult concepts like chirality and conformations that were taught in organic I.

Is this a serious thread that people actually care about?

In both my o-chem classes, I got A's. One of the classes was very hard, and the other one was not. All you can do is get the best grade you can, and it doesn't really matter what anyone else gets, because you can't do anything about it.

5 A's for 50 students at my place.

Small honors organic chem classes rule!

I also like Orgo II better and easier than I, because at this point, all the major concepts have been covered; now it's just applying these old concepts to loads of new reactions.

Yes. Although there is a lot more material and rxns in Ochem II, I found it easier studying since the first semester was getting all the basics down.

If he doesn't curve and there are still 10 A's out there, you can't really complain. I mean, there could had been 50 A's if everyone scored really high. It's evidently not ridiculously hard since people are still scoring well.

I agree with the previous posters; who cares how many A's are given out? There just needs to be one, yours. Study as hard as you can, and if you didn't get the grade you wanted, well, life's tough.

Yeah, they are super awesome! The cool thing is our prof. usually pampers us and he is so funny. We practically waste 1/2 of the class time talking about things like how grocery stores are ripping you off when they sell you a bag for 5 cents and why you shouldn't drink washing fluid.

Haha, nice. Our prof probably spends half the time talking more about the history behind what we're talking about (ie, the background of the chemists who discovered the reaction, the events leading up to the discovery, etc) than about the actual chem. He's an awesome teacher.

That sounds about right... My class consisted of about 25 students. About 8 dropped the class mid semester, 4 failed the class, almost everyone who passed received C's (including myself! stupid final exam!) and 2 got A's (these are the 2 students who lived and breathed organic chemistry, never saw the light of day that semester, and really hate having a social life:laugh: Joking) It really isnt that bad at all... I was pretty decent at it considering I didnt study as much and I simply thought of the sterochemistry portion as a game. Good luck👍

and I simply thought of the sterochemistry portion as a game.
A game 👍? The only game I can think of that is comparable to "stereochemistry" is "Russian Roulette".

0 out of 23 students got 0 As

everyone got an A?

Do most of your schools give out -/+ scores? All of mine do except for genchem. IDK if I like it or not haha, just curious 🙂

Has anyone regularly been in classes where the top 10% isn't an A?
