Does the program have to pay for each candidate they rank ? or for each candidate that match ?

I don't think that longer rank lists cost the programs anything. In my experience, for a program of 15 slots, we'd rank ~100 but would usually go no further than the 40s or 50s to fill.

Mmm... I am specifically informed by two residents that are involved in the ranking process that programs get to rank an X number of candidates for free and pay for extras. (I think I was told it was a specific number of applicants but I don't remember if it was variable depending on positions they got in the match).

Most programs will rank around 10 applicants per position.

40s to 50s for 15 spots is an above average competitive result from my experience and asking around.

We rank anywhere from 20-30 candidates for 4 slots. I'm not aware of any limitations or costs per number of applicants listed.

How many people did you invite for interview? thanks

We received >550 applications this, which we used to invite about 50 applicants to interview. However, some declined and some cancelled, and we finished with about 40 interviews. We haven't held this year's ranking meeting yet, so I don't know how many we'll actually rank. Last year, we ranked about 25-30 (out of about 40 interviews and ~500 applications).

thanks swanny...

going with the ratios, I'm feeling MUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH better about the prospect of matching in my top 2 😀

My program-UMDNJ-Camden & Atlantic Regional Medical Center.
Over 700 applicants.

Of that we're planning on interviewing about 60

We're planning on ranking about 40 (at least so far) from what I'm being told. We have spots for 6 1st years.

700 applicants? Wow. I thought i read somewhere that there are only like 1000+ applicants per year for all psych residencies. I guess that number is off. How many applications per year do competitive psych residencies receive?

Emory got more than 800 applicants alone this year.
Even middle-tiers that I went to had something like 300-400

I guess word's getting out that psychiatry isn't so bad 😛

Are these numbers in line with previous years? Because i rechecked the match stats and there are only usually about 1000 total psych applicants per year. Considering personal and geographic preferences, it would be statistically unlikely for one program to receive 500 applications, let alone 800. Or does every applicant apply to about 70 places?

Dunno, but there are a lot of FMGs that apply to psych, and most know that it is to their advantage to apply broadly.

I think there are approx 1000 AMG/MD applicants. Then when you add the DO's, 2nd pathway and FMG's you end up with more. Emory had over 700 apps last year total, so hearing they had 800 this year sounds about right.

I think the 1000 number includes everyone- correct me if im wrong.

Does anyone have "official" (published somewhere) interview numbers for these programs with 500+ applicants?

According to the link above, there were 622 USMGs and 499 International Grads applying to psychiatry for a total of 1,121.

You may be right. 700 was the number last time I checked which was in December. However there actually more applicants even after that. I don't know the exact number as of now, but its probably around 800.

fwiw
We interviewed ~60 and ranked 40 for 4 spots.
Midwest community-based program.

600+ applications...😱

Good luck to you all.:luck:

WOW!
Does that mean you have completed the process?
Isn't that a little early?
Is that the norm as far as you know?

Wow, this is really incredible. Can you elaborate on the makeup of the applicants you receive. The only conceivable explanation I can think of for so many sites receiving 500+ apps (out of a total 1100 applicants) is that the 400+ foreign medical psych applicants essentially apply to every program and hope one sticks? Are a large percentage of the apps foreign applicants

I think your hunch is exactly right.
And to answer Danica, rank lists are due within a week--how much longer to you want us to wait? We had to find a date to get everyone in the room for the cage-match ranking meeting! But yep--we're done.

There are definitely more than ~1100 applicants for the ~1000 spots. Our applications come through ERAS. The vast majority of our applications are from IMGs. We don't offer interview spots to ~500+. I don't think that most of those 500+ get interviews, and so a large number don't enter the match. The NRMP data only accounts for those who enter the match.

I can't help it... every time I see this thread from outside the Psychiatry forum I see the part "How many candidates does.." and I keep thinking "How many Psychiatry candidates does it take to screw a light bulb?" 😀

Cheer up... the pain is almost over.. (or merely begun I suppose). Wellbutrin XL 300 mg PO qdaily.

How many psychiatrists does it take to change a lightbulb?

-Only one but the lightbulb has to want to change

🙂

Last year, we ranked about 25-30 (out of about 40 interviews and ~500 applications).

Generally, how far down your rank list do you go to fill your 4 seats?

Question for previous posters who are at residencies with 500+ applicants. Do you guys know how many u.s. md applicants is typical for your program? Im assuming it would be very rare for any site to receive over 200 of such applicants.

I think we had about 100 of our 600 who were US MD or DO applicants.
I don't know any more about how that broke down, and I won't say any more about our rankings.

This year we had something like 125 applicants who graduated from a US MD or DO school and we interviewed around 80 applicants this year for 9 slots.

The number of schools per applicant has been going up over the past several years. On average IMGs apply to a larger numbr of schools than AMGs do.
