i am considering psychiatry when i apply for residency programs this fall. up to this point, i have only done my 3rd year psychiatry core rotation, which was only 6 weeks.

while i realize there is no set "magic" number, how many weeks of psychiatry rotations would be good to have completed by the time i interview? obviously anyone could apply with just having done the minimum core, but how many weeks do most residency directors look for?

the reason i am asking is when i emailed a few programs, some specifically stated that the applicant must have 12 weeks clinical psychitary experience as a minimum. i dont quite understand this part. do they mean you need to have 12 weeks by the time i graduate? there is no way i can get 6 additional weeks in by the time i interview, because i am taking time off to study for step 2 right now, and then i have other requirements i need to get before i interview, such as medicine sub-I, family practice, etc.

please help me with my confusion. thanks.

could somebody please reply to this post?

I don't remember any programs asking for a specific number of weeks. I would suggest doing at least a sub-I in psych during the early part of fourth year to demonstrate your ability to carry patients at the 'intern' level. It would not hurt to do an elective or two just so you can have more to talk about (in terms of your experiences) but it isn't necessary.

Hi all.
I'm curious if I can set up some sub-Is eventhough I've graduated already?
Any suggestions for getting a similar experience if I can't set it up? How is one supposed to get more experience in a field if they have already graduated?

It would be nice to hear from some residents who just love what they do....
