You HAVE to have a bachelor's degree to start med school. Thus having 90 to apply means you've finished 3 years of undergrad and will be graduating with 120 credit hours (which is how many hours the typical BS/BA degree is) when you finish your senior year. But I'm sure you can have 85 and really plan to kill it during your senior yr and get 35 credits before you graduate...you really just need to have the majority of your pre-reqs completed before you apply and know for a fact you'll be graduating before you matriculate.

I'm not sure about that. I've heard of cases and read med school sites that say it is extremely recommended that you do have a BS, but I don't think it is required.

That being said. I know for a fact that most med schools want 90 credits done to apply. I know the med-school affiliated with my undergrad requires completion of 90 credits prior to application.

This is straight off of a med-school's website:

"It is recommended and customary that a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution be completed prior to enrollment.Students must demonstrate that they have acquired a broad education that extends beyond the basic sciences to include the social sciences, history, arts, and languages. Broad academic training provides prospective physicians with the strong scientific skills necessary to continue study in medical science as well as a comprehensive understanding of social, historical and cultural forces that affect their professional lives and the lives of their patients. "

on U of M's website, they say this under admissions requirements:
Each University of Michigan Medical School applicant must have completed:

  • At least a four-year high school education, or equivalent, and
  • At least three years (90 semester hours) of course work in an accredited college or university within the United States or Canada.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

does this mean 90 before admission to the med school, or 90 before applying?
ahhh so confusing!
also, do i even need a major for U of M?

Based on the bolded statement, I'd say to APPLY to their school you have to have 90 credits.

Are you saying that you're going to graduate next spring, and that between now and then you're going to do more than 44 credit hours? More power to ya if you can pull that off...

If you're not going to have 90 before you apply, I'm sure you can always call the admissions office and ask them about it.

taking 9 summer credit hours puts you pretty much in the clear IMO (18 hour and 17 hour semesters ahead of course)
