Hey everyone,

How many days per week would you say that the average Ophthalmologist spends in the OR? I'm having a hard time getting a feel for the ophtho's regular work week because we get very limited exposure 3rd year at my school.

I enjoy being in the ophtho clinic, but would prefer to be in the OR, so Im trying to assess whether or not it's possible to spend 2 days/wk operating, since based on what I've seen 1 day/wk seems to be average. Additionally, what types of factors influence how often you operate? I assume things like fellowship completion, number of years practicing, size/demographics of the population in your area, etc would influence how often you get into the OR. Can anyone elaborate on these factors?

Thanks!!

this has been discussed multiple times but I will avoid just saying search for it.

Retina and plastics are more surgical and if you were aggressive could do 2 days a week, more likely 2 half days to 1.5 days per week.

There are some groups were a bunch of OD's just want you as their cutter, and you are in the OR ~3 days a week doing cataracts and refractive stuff.

for the most part though, 90% are probably doing one day.
