Over the interview trail, I have been hearing outrageous numbers of students are applying to EM this year? I know that from my school, there are about 10% applying to EM. I have heard of some schools with as many as 25-30% applying to the field.

Out of curiousity, how many students (or what percentage) of your respective class are applying this year?

At my last interview today we added the number of applicants from each of our schools (There were 5 of us) and it came out to be enough people to fill 7 average sized programs! This might be a record year for US applicants!

I've heard the same, but who knows if this is true or not.

There are 74 students in my class and there are 5 of us applying to EM.

At one of my interviews the PD told us that there were a total of 600 more applicant this year overall to all programs. He said that approximately 25% of these were to EM. I guess that would mean about 150 more applicants this year.

I think our program received about 500-600 applications, and we're interviewing about 100 for six spots (rough guesstimates).

Out of my class of 200 last year, 7 of us matched into EM, with me and another fella/chick who matched at MD places... the other 5 went to the DO EM residencies.

Q, DO

WSU always has a huge number of interested applicants (14% or so) U of Cincy has a HUGE number (I have seen a TON interview here at Wright State).
We also get alot of Surgery conversions, those that did an intern surgery year and decided the "knife" wasn't for them...don't blame em.

Yea, numbers are waaaaay up. In fact, I have it on good sources (Tintinalli AND Rosen) that there are 4 times as many EM applicants this year as last. Program directors are gloating that they can have their pick of the litter this year. Its so competitive that most of you should just withdraw your applications and cancel your interviews, or at least start back stabbing your fellow applicants at every chance you get.

But seriously, what's the point behind this thread? Is it to find a place to talk about the insecurities you all feel as you wonder if your ten interviews are enough, or is it just a little more of the shark pool psychology we're all familiar with from undergrad? These rumors go around every year. Yes, numbers of applicants are probably a little bit up, but so are the numbers of spots.

Stop worrying people. You'll match (assuming you've got at least 5 or 6 interviews lined up.) You'll almost surely go to one of your top five picks. Now settle back and enjoy your ride around the EM community this month.

Rado - Simma Dow Na. No insecurity here. Just finished my last interview and am excited to see so many people choose the same field I did. Rosen and Tintanelli told me the same thing and I just wanted to confirm it. I've done all of the back stabbing I can (aside from manning the paper shredder near some of the PD's application stacks). In fact, I was just wondernig how many I should shred. Hmm, four times as many applicants? This might take longer than I thought...

May I suggest a long range rifle, about 200 yards away from the parking lot where the applicants/interviewers park? I'll let you know the spot I hid in last year (picked off 3 easy)... it ensured I got my #1 spot.

I am begining to thing this is a think like alligators in the sewers. this was around when I interviewed last year as well. I actually asked our PD a week or two ago because there were alot of applicants last year but some programs didn't fill.

He said EM consistently has lots of applicants. It is most likely because you have people applying to EM and something else. I know a few of these as well. in the end, they decide to do something else.

Match is mysterious. Just sacrifice a chicken, say a chant and you will do fine. *g*

PD's immediately recognize that I am in the know about the match when I tell them of my sacrificial chicken coop. I keep the rum, cigar, top hat, reading bones and boa constrictor to myself, however.

I was thinking about using some strategically placed land mines near the ED entrance but I like the long rang rifle thing - maybe I'll set up in the book depository (Dallas rejected me anyway). If that doesn't work, I'll unleash a deadly canister full of SARS - that outta give them something to remember about the tour. Whuaahaaahaaahaa.

i heard that applications were way up from a chief res at michigan program. he also alluded to the fact that candidates' step scores were pretty high this year. oh well, what can you do?

The number of us graduates applying in ERAS to EM are up by 140 this year, from 1593 to 1733.
International graduate applications are relatively stable (460 to 455).
The number of US seniors who ultimately ranked at least 1 EM program was 1104 in 2001, 1134 in 2002, and 1136 in 2003. So some of those applying don't ultimately decide to rank EM (ie. take DO spots, decide to become surgeons, etc...).

Hope this helps clarify things instead of adding to anxiety.

Well I guess that clears up who we should be asking for information around here. Nibblenuts=PD or what? Nonetheless, I think the numbers show exactly what I was saying above....don't sweat it, they're not up that much.
