Assuming your taking a full load of classes 15-18 credits and aiming for a 4.0.
How many hours a week should one study?

As a student how many hours a week do you study?
I studied about 14-16 hours a week last semester and managed to pull a 3.6 over 15 credits. But I wonder if I'm doing enough.

Study as much as YOU need to in order to do well in your classes. It varies for everyone. There is no magic number.

The rule-of-thumb I've heard is to study 2 hours each week for every hour you spend in lecture (one hour of lecture = 1 credit hour) each week. Therefore, 15 credit hours would mean 30 hours of study and 18 hours would be 36 hours of study.

Basically, treat undergrad like a full-time 40-50 hour/week job. Medical school will be like two 40 hour/week jobs!😱

This is what I've heard but you have to look at yourself to find out how much you need to study. And all classes aren't equal. I've studied way under that for some classes but a lot more for others....*organic chem😴*

No more than what allows you to make a decent grade (that is, if you want to make a decent grade) and be a happy, well adjusted-human being.

I don't get this mentality, I aim for an A in every class I have ever taken. It just sickens me when people around me say "oh I really don't care for this class..as long as I get a C I don't care" 🙄

Or when I talk to professors about studying certain material and they tell me "it depends on what grade you want"....... I want an A..why the hell would I want anything else. Beside this, Its just iritating when people are so ok with mediocrity. I always aim and work to attain the best grade etc. If their is one thing I have learnt in college, it is to always "rise to the challenge".

for many people, graduating with a degree is a terminal goal. Cs get degrees.. of course they don't get MDs, but most people don't go on to professional or graduate school. mediocrity is fine with me, it helps curve the rest of us 😛

hahaha...

You have a degree true but I would imagine a 2.0 isn't going to get you far in anything.

 Well, I hope you never lose your 4.0 hard-on. I bet some of those same people that sicken you are mutually sickened by what they see as something of a gunner (not that I'm calling you one, but ... hey, it's all relative, as you've said in a roundabout way).

Anyway, myself, I go out of my way to pull As with as little extra studying as possible. I tend to get a lot out of always attending lecture and reviewing bits and pieces of material as I think of it, so I don't really net a whole lot of time doing hardcore studying. But I'm also not bothered by those that just don't care as much about grades as I do. Different strokes, that's all.

Oh, and Abilene, that policy does change to P=MD, y'know 😀

I could care less if the person next to me does better then me. I don't try to sabotage them or anthing  I just concentrate on my own success.

It all depends on the student and how easily they pick up concepts. I'm currently mantaining a 3.85 GPA with about 3 hours of study a week total (not counting class time of course)

Again, that's great if that's what YOU want to do, but not everyone wants all A's all the time. If getting a B in chemistry (which I hate) is going to cost me 3-5 hours a week of studying, and getting an A would cost me an extra 10 hours of torture, then I think I'll take the B. I have better, happier, much more pleasant things to do during that time.

Why the hell would you want A's all the time? Do you really think it makes you a better person or a better doctor...do you think it makes a difference in your life in the long run? That a 4.0 is really that much better than a 3.8?

See how I can turn that around?

Let's hear it for Margarita Wednesdays!! :hardy:

I need a lot, but then again I skip class more than attend and have never taken notes in my life.

I just zone out in class and cant learn anything. Weirdly enough I need a lot of background noise to help me concentrate, a busy starbucks or at home with the music cranked is what gets my motor started.

...baby.

I say if the class is easy, do just enough to get an A...If it is hard, just enough to get through with an AB. This minimizes effort and maximizes GPA, what more could you really want 🙂.

you should study <168 hrs/wk.....otherwise you will suffer from agoraphobia.....namely a situation in which you would not have a book in front of you.

interesting, i though Margarita Wednesdays were on Wednesday of the current year as well as all Wednesdays of the previous decade superimposed onto the current year plus the Wednesdays of the roman calendar......anyone?
