How many interview offers do you have for psychiatry at this point?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
US MD, applied to 30, received 18 invites. Only 6 of the 18 came in after October 1st. The fact that I've only received 1 invite in the last 2.5 weeks makes me think that I'm pretty much done getting invites...but at the same time, that seems odd given that the PD survey said most programs send invites in October...anyone have any insight into why invites seem to have slowed down for a lot of us since the MSPE release? Is it typical for things to pick back up in the last week of October?
You have 18 interviews as a US MD....

It's ok if you are done getting interviews

It is only typical if people hoard 20 invites but will eventually only go on 8 or 10. We will invite a fairly fixed number of applicants if people cancel early enough to replace them. Right now, everyone is inviting extremely well qualified candidates. The process needs to get more real before we can start inviting the just well qualified candidates. Unfortunately, how quickly this happens is less up to programs than up to applicants.

US MD, no red flags. Applied to 35 programs, only 4 invites so far. 4 rejections. Im worried, any advice for what I should do?

Hm, did you only apply to particular types of programs? How were your scores? I'm sure you'll hear more soon!

Hmm I think my scores are not in my favor, they are a standard deviation below the average. I applied mostly to academic programs, and community programs.

Hi, all

I need a place to vent. I applied to 171 programs half psych and half family med.

US IMG
Step 1: 199
Step 2: 220
CS: passed on first attempt

Interview invitation: 0

For those of you who got 4 interview and still panicking, I like to say everything will be ok.
For those of you who got 20 interviews, f**k you and good luck.

I can't sleep, I am constantly tense, I have depression. I feel like I messed up my life by not studying hard.

PS: how is it that 90% of the people here score above the 90 percentile.

You think people with very average scores are super keen to post that in the Internet?

ITT: people with a huge number of invites and great numbers who charitably are neurotic overachieving types who agonize about having to go to Cornell instead of Mclean, and people in a bad situation with low scores or red flags who are panicking due to lack of invites.

The great average middle is plodding along with significantly less worry, or at least worry not salved by Internet strangers.

Have you tried calling programs or considered applying to one year prelim programs? (especially something not highly desired like a surgical prelim). There are other options too such as pursuing research for a year or doing something else medically related.
It sounds like you are understandably feeling pretty down right now and I hope that you have someone to talk to about how you are feeling. If you need help emotionally/mentally please don't be afraid to seek it out.

At this point I don't mind doing anything as long as I get to use that freaking knowledge I tried so hard to learn for the past 4 years.

Do you have any experience with prelim program? From what I been researching, they are highly competitive.

Does your personal statement lean towards Psych or FM? Also, what specialties are your letters from?

I wrote a separate personal statement for both psych and family medicine. got 2 letters for psych and one letter for family.

Does it matter at this point? obviously my step score is holding me back.

It isn't the step score. Students at my USMD school with sub-200 Step 1 scores are seeing > 50% interview-to-application ratios in family medicine, even at the more desirable California programs.

I don't know of any sub-200 psych applicants though, so I don't know how they are faring.

Now I wish I went to a US med school. What is the point of passing a test first try if it's not good enough

Look at the bright side: if you went to US med school, you'd be $200,000 in debt now. At least you don't have to pay much to go to med school in China.

It's worse, I went to a Caribbean med school and I am 400,000 in debt.

What's Plan B if you don't match? Just remember that as long as you've taken federal loans you can get on an income driven payment plan and cap your monthly payments at 10% of discretionary income. But, yes, the ideal situation is getting matched.

US IMG failed passed step 1 and CS first try, had multiple attempts on CK 🙁
CK is quite a bit easier than Step 3. If I was a PD I would be very hesitant to take even a US MD who failed CK.

Seconding Dr. Harambe. I'm glad you are reaching out to us and using student doc as an outlet. I'm sure you studied hard. Getting through any step exam and passing requires so much work, however you feel that you ended up doing.

I know an IMG student who got 3 interviews last year, didn't match. This year she did an externship for 4 months at a psychiatric hospital in the US and has plenty of interviews. It is very possible that this will not be the case for you, and you'll get some interviews coming your way soon (second wave!!!!). But worst case, it seems like a gap year can make a huge difference. There is hope.

If CK is "quite a bit easier than Step 3," then why is the average score lower?

Hey, that's actually not correct. As of last year Step 2 CK average was 240. Step 3 average was 226 as of 10/19/16. I agree Step 3 is a little harder and most people score lower (personal and anecdotal). Good luck!

"Does China admit dual nationality? Answer: China does not recognize dual nationality. The Article 3 of China Nationality Law holds that the country will not admit the dual nationality of a Chinese citizen. Moreover, the Article 9 of that law declares that as soon as a Chinese takes a foreign citizenship, he will automatically lose his Chinese citizenship."

Legally no. There're some grey zones though. I don't know how people handle it. But as soon as the Chinese gov finds out you loose your Chinese nationality

Have institutions started sending out rejections / are rejections a thing? Or do most go the way of silent rejections? Is no news good news (I.e., might I be in a pool for second or third-wave invites)?

Can confirm rejections are being sent out. Received one from Mt. Sinai and Brigham earlier this week. Still not entirely convinced no news is good news though...

I have gotten outright rejections from about 5% of the programs I applied to.

On the other hand, I have rejected interviews from about 5% of the programs I applied to. So I guess the feeling is mutual.

US MD lower tier school. 30 apps, 13 invites, 2 waitlist email, 2 rejections. Scheduled 10 interviews.

I'm at 9 but I haven't received any more invites in a month so it's been super slow

When do you guys think it might be ok to start cancelling some interviews? I have some that are near where I live but aren't my top choice. I have about 11-12 interviews lined up, probably 3-4 match/safety and then another 7-8 that would be considered competitive programs in competitive locations. I don't want to cancel too many and then come up short on Match Day, but I also don't want to interview more than I have to. I worry that I'd be in the bottom half of all of the competitive program rank lists and thus cancelling might not be a good thing to do in my situation. Any thoughts on this? I would love to give my interview spots to other candidates as long as I am assured that it's something I can do without compromising my own cycle!

I scheduled 10 interviews after canceling 3. All of the programs I went to (5 so far) interviewed 10 times the residency spot (i.e. 120 applicants for 12 residency spots). I asked both the PD and PC and did the maths myself. I would rather use the money for my vacation travel than my interviews travel. Unless you are extremely socially awkward I wouldn't worry about compromising the cycle.

US MD? 10 is fine. US DO? 12 or so. IMG? Probably 15 or so just to be safe.

Let's hope so... I am about to cancel one of my invites so that will bring me down to 10 interviews/places to rank.

Still only 4 invites, I'm very concerned....what are the chances of getting an interview invite this late in the game?

Kind of a weird question considering we don't have your application packet in hand to review. Though I will say they are still sending interviews and I GUARANTEE YOU GET AT LEAST ONE MORE 🙂
