How many interview offers do you have for psychiatry at this point?

US MD student, applied to 30, 8 invites now (10/10/16)

As of 11/5, now with 14 invites, but I added 20 more programs on 10/14/16, haven't had an invite in a couple weeks

US DO student. Only 3 interviews so far. Should I start panicking?

Anyone else feel like things have really slowed down in the past week or so? Im at 7 interviews right now (US MD) so I feel like I'm okay, but haven't heard from anywhere in a week. Still nothing from some of my top choices.

This is y'all's (hopefully) helpful reminder that last year's PD survey found:

13% of invites went out in September
49% went out in October
23% out in November
10% out in December
5% out in January or later

In other words, even though invites are definitely front-loaded in the season, once October's over, ~35-40% of interview invites will still have yet to be sent! And probably to those of us who aren't the cream of the crop, and weren't in those programs' first waves. ;-)

US MD 7 invites 29 programs. Still kinda worried since I feel like I need 10 definitely match.

US DO. I'm at 6 interviews and 2 rejections from 37 programs. Things have definitely slowed down for me too. Got all my interview invites pre-MSPE and 2 rejections post-MSPE but no other interview invites in the last 1.5 weeks.

Yup, the panic is starting to set in..8 so far now.

8 interviews don't seem like a good reason for panicking.

You're right, it isn't. I guess I was hoping for 10 to be safe and our school sent an email last week saying that's how many we should have now.

You may still get at least 10 total, it's not even mid-October yet. I know it's hard not to freak out when people start reporting being placed on interview wait lists, but consider that not all programs review applications and send out interview invites at the same speed. Even based on last year's reports, some programs send out large batches of invites, and others let them trickle sliwly.

In any case, I'm sure you specifically will be just fine. Good luck in interviewing and matching to a program that's a good fit for you!

NRMP match data shows that among US grads who matched, 53% got their first choice, 16.5% got their second choice, 9.7% got their third choice, 5.9% got their fourth choice, and only 15.9% went lower than that. Psychiatry is probably even more optimistic. Bottom line, the odds of not matching with 8 interviews vs. 10 interviews is negligible. If everyone goes on as many interviews as they can get, half of the applicants will not be going on any and a lot of programs will go unfilled. If you don’t want to have to buy last minute plane tickets, please convince your gunner classmates to cancel early if they aren’t going to use their interview offers. Please get real now. Sitting on invites then canceling last minute is selfish and the psych world is way too small to be making enemies. Just be good people and make these decisions early so we can help people plan their lives.

I think the match is a very positive thing, but if things continue in this trend, a dozen of the top programs will jump all out and poach the top 100 applicants. Both sides would have reasonable motivation. 😉

update so far: 8 interview invites total, DO student. 4 before deans letter, 4 after. my last one was on sunday i believe. i did apply very broadly. but ill echo what some people have said : some places i for sure would give me an invite haven't given me one, and others that i was worried about being competitive enough, gave me an invite so you really never know lol. I wish all my fellow DOs the absoulte best!

still i anticipate more to go out gradually so definitely still early for people to freak. i think even the odds of matching still aren't bad if you have 4-5 or so.

Hmm...I am a re-applicant from a "high ranked" west coast school. Last year I applied to 21...then added 9 more after a month. Interviewed mostly in CA (because that is where I got most of my interviews). Didn't match. 😢 I guess the biggest sin that I committed was a repeat Step 1. Step 2 CK/CS were no problem. Everything else in my application was ok.

This year I applied to 100+ programs. I have since improved parts of my application, took Step 3 even (waiting on score). So far I have 6 interviews. 3 in CA, 1 midwest, 2 NY. I don't know what more to do. I didn't expect the Step 1 score would be such a problem for psych programs. I'm wondering now if they will care if I pass Step 3...

Thanks for sharing your experience psychEpath, can you add in how many programs you submitted in your rank list? Also, did you consider doing the SOAP process last year when you found out you didn't match?

I've seen conflicting messages on student doctor regarding emailing programs we are interested in, however is it a risk worth taking for top 2? What about with a legitimate reason like Step 2 CK/CS scores recently coming in?

I've had fair luck with emailing programs. Some repeatedly. I made my subject line something other than, "applicant to your program" and stated a few reasons I really liked their program, these are mostly things that made them different from the average in some form or fashion. I had poor response until I did this. N=1

How many interviews do you have so far? Also how quick did they respond? I am waiting on my top 3 right now and they have already sent out their initial interviews. Do you think it would be good to email them?

Why not? Seize the initiative. Go for it.

E-mailing to get an interview may be helpful. E-mailing post interview to tell programs you are madly in love, not so much. A thank you for interviewing me is fine, but leave it at that because neither side has much to say.

How interested you are is up to you and most directors are mature enough not to play that game. We just rank them by quality. If you like us, put us #1, if you like some else better, put them #1. There isn’t any way to game this thing and those who try only hurt themselves by over thinking it. Directors are just not prone to say “Hey, this guy really likes us, lets rank him over the guy we thought was better”. We keep communication limited because if we seem excited, we can be guilty of misleading and if we seem neutral, it gets interpreted as disinterest. The exact same wording in an e-mail from us can easily be seen as encouraging by one applicant and discouraging by another. E-mail is very easy to project onto. It is almost impossible to be sarcastic or rhetorical in this kind of communication.

My class of 2016 Psych Interest Group said they had very good results emailing the program director on October 10th. I've seen the same advice in this forum.

I decided to be polite and wait until today, but yeah I emailed a few of my "appropriate" and "safety" programs Friday afternoon, letting them know why some stranger from half way across the country is actually quite interested in their specific program. That kind of information just isn't conveyed in a one-size-fits-all ERAS app.

However, when it comes Step results I put my trust in the programs hitting Refresh from time to time. There were a LOT of Step 2 CS results released on Wednesday (October 12th), and I'm sure the program directors don't need to be reminded of that.

That feeling when SDN disproves your theory that you're not getting invites because they haven't been sent out yet...oof.
This is exhausting.

I did try to SOAP. Last year there were 6 spots nationally open for psych. 6!!! That was unheard of before. I ranked 9 programs (8 CA and 1 decent out of state).

Remember though that I had a huge red flag (step 1 repeat). People from my program with lower scores than my repeat step 1 have been getting incredible interviews. So I think it's the primary filter. Good luck!!

A bit of encouragement from someone who applied last year. At this point I only had 3 interviews and was also panicking, but at the end of the cycle I ended up doing okay and matching to my top choice.

Thanks for sharing!

2 IVs with broad applications to East Coast and Mid West.

stats: Canadian IMG, scores: 248/257, prior research, currently in psych research at a prestigious institution. I would think at least 2 of my LORs are great given my great relationship. The weakness in my application aside from IMG status, is that one of my psych LORs may be more general than psych specific according to the writer because he thought he might do me a favour making it broader. Also my PS was highly personal and read well according to those I shared it with for feedback, but I think I should have standardized it with examples of leadership, teamwork, and a psych patient - I seem to see this example posted as a great letter everywhere I look...

In all honesty, I wish I could construe I wanted a research career, or rural based work, or a specific fellowship but I'm the kind of person that figures that out with a lot of experience so I'd use the program to determine that rather than resting my judgement on just a couple months of psych specific experience. I just wanna help people and mental health seemed like where I was best at delivering on that. But now I'm getting concerned about being able to deliver on that intent.

That said, I'm glad this forum exists as its a great relief to read the comments and stats to maintain the hope. One major reason I choose medicine was because of the community it fostered and you guys are a great example of that!

Canadian citizen who went to a caribbean school.
have you done CS yet? wouldn't expect too much in the way of interviews without CS. that said quite a few places don't start inviting IMGs until late october or even november. i'm sure your personal statement was garbage like everyone else, it really doesn't matter. research without publications is not particularly helpful. your good scores should help thought, it really is still early for IMGs.

i have a few pubs (non-medical though), also abstracts and posters that are medical related.. that said, its good to know there is typically a delay for IMGs..

Lol - garbage like everyone else... the humor helps.

yeah i passed CS and all my scores were ready when apps opened.

So Friday at 5pm I emailed a couple of programs telling them why I really wanted to go there. Mostly it was geographically related reasons that didn't really shine through in ERAS. I mentioned nothing about the program itself.

Monday 10am scored an interview from one of those programs.

Are mid-October emails the new psych residency secondary application? My psych interest group said it worked really well for them last year.

Best of luck, people.

May psychiatrists not deny the existence of the subconscious. Good luck. 😀

US grad. I've had 8 so far. I'm hoping to match to California where I am from. I haven't heard from the top schools there (UCSF, UCLA-Semel, UCSD). My Part I/II are 232/254 with honors in Neuro and Psych and high pass on the others. Lots of service work. No publications. Minimal research. Don't know if this is competitive enough for those schools...

US MD, applied to 30, received 18 invites. Only 6 of the 18 came in after October 1st. The fact that I've only received 1 invite in the last 2.5 weeks makes me think that I'm pretty much done getting invites...but at the same time, that seems odd given that the PD survey said most programs send invites in October...anyone have any insight into why invites seem to have slowed down for a lot of us since the MSPE release? Is it typical for things to pick back up in the last week of October?

0 invites. My friend is telling me I should be emailing PD's right now. Is this sound advice?

Hello all! New to the forums. Thought i should add my stats to the bank. Applied 9/15 woth complete application step 2 cs pass first attempt. steps 1-2 passed first attemp with scores of 243 and 242 respectively. Applied widely to 149 programs as I am an IMG. So far 8 interviews of which two are from my home state of California.

US IMG failed passed step 1 and CS first try, had multiple attempts on CK 🙁

Have you taken Step 3? With those CK failures, program directors can worry that you'll fail Step 3 and have trouble getting your license.

I have not yet. I don't think I'll be ready for step 3 anytime soon.
