how many interviews?

How many IR fellowship interviews would you go to?

Of course, this is a personal opinion question, so there is no one correct answer. Of course, "the more the better" is the theoretical answer. In your opinion though, how many interviews does an applicant realistically need to feel fairly certain that they'll match? Assume that the applicant is less loveable than Ryan Seacrest but more lovable than a horse fly.

Totally depends on the program you are coming from and the people who are supporting you. If you come from MGH and the IR Guru there is calling for you, you need only one interview if you don't want to stay at your program.
If you are from the community hospital unknown to most places, probably you need 6 interviews. It is obvious that you may not get interview from many places that you apply. But if they give you interview, there is a good chance of match.
Though IR is one of the hot ones, still matching is not as difficult as you think. You will be able to find a spot. For fellowship, many/most are not willing to move. Most highly desirable applicants from top programs stay at their home program. So if a program gives you interview (=it does not fill internally), there is a good chance to match as most of other interviewees are not also from top programs.

I would go on 8-10 with a few backup programs that arent interviewing as many people and are not as competitive to make sure u match. One reason the IR fellowships are so competetive is that many programs just have 2-3 spots and they are interviewing 50-60 people. That means if u interview at Colorado or BCVI the ratio of people interviewing to the actual spot is 15-20:1.
