it's very hard to get all of your recommendation letters to be strong, but out of 5, how many of them need to be strong?

bad letters can flag you, and neutral letters don't hurt or harm you, and strong letters push you up in admissions, from what i've heard.
if you have no bad letters, how many of them MUST be strong?

such a silly question....i will let you think about this and realize why i said it was silly

How many must be strong to do what?

Get into medical school? Zero.
Help with increasing admission chances? It depends on the lettter. Just one strong letter can get people into school, even with substandard stats. Again, it depends.

And yes, this is somewhat of a silly question.

i was always under the impression that letters were impactful on your admissions chances, and would determine whether they would look at the rest of your application only if the letters compelled them to. looks like i was wrong, and i look silly now

5. A neutral letter is essentially bad. Of course LOR's are only one factor among many in the admissions process.

This is time to use your critical thinking skills, which will be valuable for MCAT and medical school.
