Hello collegues,

I am an international student and just graduated with my PharmD from Howard University. I was wondering how many months of OPT we get as pharmacists. It was originally 12 months, but now i am hearing it has been extended to 29 months (under the STEM program). Has anybody heard anything about this?

Pharmacy is not one of the professions eligible for the 29months....only science majors, and professional major like pharmacy or dentistry r not eligible...u only hav 12 months of OPT..if u did not use some of it while u were in pharmacy schools...By the way how did u get ur internship hours? Did you use Cpt..I am an intl student as well, P1.

May I ask what do you need OPT for?

If you want to work in retail, why don't you find a company that will sponsor you a H1B? Both of OPT & H1B require a lot of complicated papers so I think you should go for only H1B.

Does Howard University career center help you anything with your situation? I just wonder if you already studied and did rotation there in 3 or 4 years, you should know that (network, job sponsorship,....)

anyone know how international students visa works if i graduate from pharmacy school and intend to do a residency ?

It will be hard...u will only be able to do one year residency using ur OPT(12 month)

Hi, I'm an international student too, just applying to pharmacy schools now and waiting for interviews and acceptance. I heard that internationals can't get licensed in ny, so if I go to Buffalo, what should I do when I graduate if I want to practice in other states? Please advise because I have no idea what the procedures are...

you could just get ur license in other states that r less strict like NY

Hey there,

Since you're a senior member I believe you can rightfully advise me.

Since we wont get more than 12 months for OPT, will we be having reduced months left for OPT if we do pharmacy internships while doing our PharmD?

I am really worried about the job availability currently, do you know if the retail chains are sponsoring international students who are PharmD graduates? Do you know if hospitals do it for PGY1?

I think several retail chains stopped sponsoring a few years ago and Wal-Mart was the only one who did, but it also stopped sponsoring too.

Hospitals usually do not sponsor PGY1........ not enough space for even US citizens
