It's pretty much a given that almost everyone in med school is at least somehow type A... driven, motivated, organized. But how many of your would consider yourself introverted or extroverted? A lot of students I've talked to and stories I've read have constantly talked about social anxieties encountered in med school and internship, so I'm kind of curious!

In high school and college, I was always moderate...neither overtly introverted or extroverted. Going through med school, though, I became much more outspoken (part of this was gaining confidence in my field), and now, as a resident, I'm definitely extroverted.

In high school and most of college I was mostly introverted. Now I think I'm more extroverted than I used to be (thanks to living with a VERY introverted husband). Most tests I take place me right in the middle of the different personality categories. It just depends on the day.

my professors in undergrad attempted to punish me for being extroverted, but my mild autism saved the day, lol. . . I would describe myself as introspective, yet highly social. . .Power cannot be attained casually, it most be actively sought. . . . .

On the Myers-Briggs I have very consistently scored as almost smack dab in the middle, but just a little bit introverted.

For all the other categories I've been one at one point in my life, and the other at a different point.

It depends on who I'm around; introverted usually, but I can be an extrovert if I have to.

Here's an interesting twist on the question... how many of you feel that med school has CHANGED your personality from one to the other?

Interesting question. I think I used to be really extroverted. Medical school has made me pretty cynical though and by extension, I have less interest in talking to a lot of people. That's kind of sad, I guess.

I think med school and the medical profession forces you to be functionally extroverted, but I'm definitely an introvert at heart. It's going to make things a bit of a struggle for me, but that's ok. I've got 4-5 years of research hiding behind a computer screen before I have to deal with that issue too much. 😀

this poll is opposite of the general public. granted it is people on an internets msg board.

70% vs 30%

Wow....a lot of book worms here?

I think maybe the results are skewed though. I am a very bookish person...so I have a tendency to take breaks and when I do I go onto SDN....

...and so me thinks' that the 70 to 30 ratio is because most of the people on SDN are introverts :hardy:

Yeah, isn't everyone on SDN really neurotic from thinking about things so much that they have to post to an internet forum to find peace? I have medschool friends who've never heard of SDN, they seem like the relaxed ones.

I must admit, some of the people at my place have said I spend too much time on SDN. I can't help it though...maybe....I'm addicted.....to SDN..

Just think about how addicted those people with 10,000+ some post on SDN must be like. They need rehab :meanie::meanie::hardy:

I am a very bookish person as well, but I still count myself as an extrovert. From what I've heard about introversion vs. extroversion, it's not really about how you spend your time but about where you get your energy from, for instance- extroverts tend to feel exhilarated and energetic from working in a group, or being in a group of people (friends etc) whereas introverts tend to find this very draining, they can hang out with lots of people or work in a group if needed, but find it exhausting and want to hide for awhile by themselves to regain their energy level.

At least that's how the "personality experts" have explained it to me (people who have spent much of their careers studying the different personality tests and types, Myers Briggs included. I am an ENTP btw 🙂 )

I think ppl on forums tend to be introverts. That's why they talk here instead of in real life.

I'm very extroverted. But I'm painfully aware of social constructs and expected behavior. So on occaision I get myself in a situation that I don't recognize and then I'm failry quiet until I figure out where I stand and whats expected - then once I'm confortable - I'll be outspoken again (if its appropriate).

Not necessarily. I haven't met any of my future classmates (well, I've met a couple that are from my undergrad but I wasn't close friends with them during undergrad) as we don't live near each other yet, so SDN is a good way to communicate. Also, who wants to have one and one personal, telephone conversations with people that you've never met located at distant medical schools? It'd take forever to talk to that many people! Who has the time for that? Forums like this are way more convenient and efficient to communicate with fellow medical students.

You can't say just that those that post here shy away from talking to med students at their school. I don't see the correlation.

That's true. According to this book about specialty selection I've been reading it's important to consider your personality type when picking your field. Extroversion usually correlate with specialties such as surgery or EM, while introversion suits things like IM, pathology, pysch. By extroversion vs. introversion they refer to whether you thrive on an internal vs. external environment not necessarily your social skills or lack their of.

Nah, some of us just talk ALL THE TIME regardless of the venue.
My MB score puts me at uber-extrovert.
