Lets limit this to immediate family only. No 3rd cousins twice removed etc etc.

If so, how has this helped you if at all?
Do you think it is advantageous to have family in the medical field?
If not, how has this helped / hurt?

I'll start, I don't have anyone in my family (immediate or distant) that is involved in any sort of medical field so I'll be the first one (hopefully) entering the profession.

You're such a typical indian
Sorry, it had to be said 😀

My mom's a Nurse Practitioner and my dad is a Physician Assistant.

All of my family is/was in the medical field with the exception of my parents.

not in my immediate family, nope. 🙁

My mom is a nurse. I would say it has been immensely beneficial since I have always had a realistic perception of medicine. I feel like a lot of people I have met at interviews have no idea what they are getting into.

Working in the hospital has also helped solidify that medicine is what I want to do, but in an entry level position you do not really experience the call and crazy hours, so having a family member that does really exposes you to that the best.

There's absolutely no one in my family in the medical field. I wish there was. :/ SDN gives amazing advice, but it must be pretty awesome to have someone that you're close to and will help guide you through the process, or even give you a bit of insight.

doctor and doctor and doctor = 3 doctors

so much pressure on me LOL

My brother's a dentist. Hasn't really helped since he went to Australia to study and practice.

No one in my family does anything science-related at all. I have a mechanic and a secretary/teacher as parents, and they're awesome. 🙂 I have a lot of teachers in my family, actually.

Nurse and Dietitian . Neither have been helpful though because both did their schooling outside of the US. Though they've been helpful in seeing the lifestyle and such..

The word 'family' is singular and therefore the following verb should agree in number (it should be is, not are), typicalfob.

Of note, I have seen citations on this site of studies that showed that being the progeny of a doctor was a significant predictor of poorer performance in medical school when compared with those without physician parents. I don't remember the details.

My parents make a good salary that I do not have to work and I can hire a tutors, and my parents find me doctors to shadow.

My mother was a nurses aid, then LPN, then RN and now she is the administrator for her building.

I only see her like once a year if that (i live overseas at a military post) so I can't say it has a huge influence on me, but it has some. Whenever I visit Ohio I volunteer at her building and since she is the administrator it makes that somewhat easy because she is the boss, she is the one I need permission from to do it. That is an advantage although it is a geriatric facility and that is not my passion. I am on the opposite end, I want to help children, she wants to help the elderly.😀

She wanted to be a doctor, but she was a single mom for a long time and it wasn't feasible for her.

I'm filipino, ergo all of my female and most of my male relatives are nurses, including my mom. If I didn't have so many freaking relatives who are nurses, I would want to become a nurse.

There are only one or two doctors in my extended extended family.

It's just increased my interest in medicine.

LOTS of nurses (mom, 3 aunts, at least 1 first cousin...) but that's it. No doctors, no NP's, etc.

My mom and her sister have had a positive influence me, but I bet if they had it their way I'd be going to nursing school. 😉

My mom is an LPN. It is super beneficial...she is extremely smart. I think she's one reason I first became interested in medicine. Definitely helps to give you an accurate perspective of medicine.

Both of my parents are physicians (both OB-GYNs) and my sister is an ER doc. It's been incredibly beneficial through this process to ask their advice about curriculum differences, impact of location on residency apps in the 4th year, and generally what to expect. I think even if you don't have somebody within your immediate family that is a physician, anybody who is familiar with the process, including current med students you meet during interviews that give tours, would be a good resource to ask as many questions as you can to help make a decision as to where to attend med school.

My mom's a nurse. That's it. No doctors that I know of except for a distant cousin who's a cardiologist.

Mom's a nurse, a few cousins are MD's and engineers, another cousin working on her PhD in Public Health. Grandparents were engineers, teachers.

My mother was a medical lab technologist for a while, if that counts! She went back to school when I was in middle school and I helped her study and such. I think that helped push medicine into my radar, but I don't know that I wouldn't have stumbled upon it another way. It's nice that she has knowledge about medicine, though! It is definitely a plus to have someone to talk to about it.

None, almost all of my family is into some sort of finance field. Maybe thats one of the reasons I want to get the hell away from it

I have an aunt who's a nurse, but that hasn't influenced me.

Nope, first generational college student here.

It always surprises me when there's a poll; so many people vote, very few post. I guess that shows there are so many lurkers 🙂

Usually I found that Guest/Member ratio is about 3.

That makes me uncomfortable :scared: Anyway, only person in my family that's related to the medical field is my mom; she's a CNA. She actually scared me away from the medical field initially, but I've come to love it.

I answered "no" to this; however, though I do not consider it as counting and/or having an influence, it might be worth noting that my dad installs and services (aka, fixes) medical imagining equipment. It's been of no influence and/or help that I can tell, though, for both obvious and more complicated reasons. Other than that minor connection with the with the medical world, however, my family has no connection with health care and/or medicine.

Absolutely no one in my family is in the medical field. It would be nice to have parents that are physicians , to help guide me through this application process.

First in the immediate family to graduate from college.

My mom is a dental hygienist. I don't know if that counts for anything.

Never mind, I actually remembered that one of my aunts is a nurse.
