so i know its premature, but i was just wondering.... if 50% of applicants get accepted somewhere, do we know what the %age is of people who dont get any interviews at all? hmmmmmm

I don't really wanna know.

(hoping this thread dies quickly) :luck:

A good amount. But it's rare for someone who applies to enough schools, has a decent ps, and has "the numbers" to not get any interviews.

It does, unfortunately, happen. Maybe you have to have a combination of problems for it to happen, but it does.

There was a fella from my post bacc school with a 3.7/33 that applied to 10 or so schools that didn't get any...

its not uncommon at all. if the people were too selective in the schools they applied to, or overly confident, or just applying without medicine as their true intention and this vibe was present in their secondaries or PS, or just plain unlucky...it happens.

This thread is depressing me....especially a week before the mcat. :scared:

i know of a couple of people who had decent scores. like not the best but still you would think of all the schools they were applying to they would get at least ONE interview. this has happened to at least 3 people and they applied to about 20-30 schools....sigh....

this is why i applied to 40+, especially being from CA.

...though at the same time, looking on mdapplicants - there are still a good number of people with decent numbers, decent schools applied to, and a bunch of acceptances....

and good luck with that mcat!! 🙂

I think it's so hard to know how many people might never get an interview. Here on SDN, it is self-selecting and so people who are doing pretty well for the most part, might be more inclined to post whereas people who are not doing as well as they might want to, might be too intimidated to post.

I applied to over 30 schools and I got a handlful of interviews (ok, 5) and two acceptances. For me, I was glad because I got into the one school I wanted to go to.

Still, I am like JLee, I would rather shoot the money out during one long, expensive year and get in somewhere than try and be thrifty and apply to fewer schools. In the end, too, I can now say: well, I tried and I didn't get into Yale, Mayo, Rochester, Stanford, etc which is better than saying: I wonder if I could have gotten into ...

40+! 😱 out of curiosity, how much did that cost?

Don't let it depress you...use it as a lesson. You need to apply to enough schools and schools that you have a reasonable chance at. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't apply to some reach schools, but that they shouldn't be the majority of the ones you apply to. If you are a decent applicant and select schools to apply to reasonably then your chances are good.

Thanks so much for saying that! Your post made so much sense... but this part really hit home. I did apply to a couple of upper tier schools in my mix, and later wondered if I wasted two shots... but I think you're right...

It's better to try and know for sure than to wonder and wonder and wonder later on...

Poor Personal Statement? Bad Letters of Rec.? Not enough Extra-curriculars? Applied to too many 'reach' schools? It could be a host of things. Good GPA/MCAT does not ensure an interview, though it usually goes a long way.
