How many pre-req's left to complete before you apply?

So my plan since I embarked upon this veterinary path has been to apply for the first time for the class of 2016. My original hope was, at that time to only have left 2 pre-req's (genetics and biochem) to complete, and probably add on some more upper level sciences depending on what's available that term. Due to the summer course schedule, it's looking like I'm going to have 4 (genetics, biochem and physics) instead... 😡 All of my other stuff is done- I have an undergrad in fine arts and most of a master's in education, so I'm science-ing and math-ing it up right now. Love it. 👍

Obviously, the more I have completed, the better, but is this really bad? Just curious about other people's experiences....

thanks y'all! 🙂

AFAIK as long as you would be able to complete all pre-reqs prior to matriculation, you can apply without being automatically being put in the "no" pile. As you said, more completed is better, but I couldn't tell you what the minimums are.

I'm applying this fall. I still have:
Genetics
Biochem (two semester course)
Possibly animal nutrition, animal science, speech (depends on where I apply)
GRE 😀

I'm a biology major, so a lot of them I've already taken because I need them to graduate or they were pre-reqs for other classes.

Different schools have different rules. Some only allow you to have one pre-req left 'in-progress' during the spring, and some allow two. Most won't allow any more than that. A couple schools even allow summer classes, but that's not too common. I don't know if any schools don't allow ANY pre-req courses to be taken in the spring... though some may have rules about *what* courses you have left to take, specifically.

So definitely look into the specifics for where you think you'll be applying.

That's so cool! I have a B.A. in education and a M.A. in Literacy/Reading. I'm also " science-ing and math-ing it up right now" too; although I am just starting out with my pre-req's.
Wow. I'd love to talk to you about your non-traditional journey to vet med, like me.🙂

Kitty 613 there are many a non-trad thread on this board that I am sure you will find some comfort in (I'm a non-trad as well)......

drum roll......perhaps if you are lucky TT will do the honors of posting a link

Thanks for that insight, twelvetigers. I don't anticipate having more than two, possibly only physics, actually. Biochem and genetics are generally fall courses at my school, so it all depends on whether the bio prof who teaches genetics gets his fall sabbatical or not! lol. I suppose I could take it somewhere else, but I've already had him, and he loves his genetics, so I'd know what I'm in for!

anytime. 🙂 It's nice to have people who are having similar experiences to commiserate with. 😉 I stalked your posts a bit and saw that your teaching position got cut, too? The job I was at last year was one I anticipated being at for years to come, then I got nailed because I was the newest hire. blargh. stress. I'm generally feeling like it's all gonna be for the best, and now that I'm back in the science and working for some vets I think I wouldn't be satisfied to go back to what I was doing before....

I had all my pre-reqs done except for Immunology when I applied (I took it this past fall)--this made my first 3.5 years hell and my last semester a dream. After 18-21 credits every semester, usually 15-18 of which were core majors level science, I now have 12 credits. Equine exercise phys (3), horse production (2), food animal medicine (3), senior seminar in animal science (1), and biology special investigations (undergrad research, 3).... it's a dream. I haven't cracked a textbook at all this semester... I haven't even bought any.

I finished all my prereqs last semester because OVC doesn't allow you to apply without first completing all the prereqs. It was a huge pain in the rear to finish them all within 2.5 years, I had to overload last year to fit it all in without taking summer courses.

Does my B.A. in theology qualify me for non-trad? ;-)

Ekkk I have about 2.5 years left worth of pre-reqs, so many I can't even count 😕. But I have massive amounts of patience and I like taking my time. I want to make sure I do as much as I can correctly. 😀

Already having been through 4 years of undergrad and four semesters of grad school I don't know that I'm not taking my time.... 😉

Eeek! :scared:That's exactly what happened to me. Worked for three years and then got the pink slip because I was low on the totem poll. Talk about being depressed. 🙁How do you move on after something so devastating? You put so much investment into something and then like that, it's taken away! Well, you couldn't have convinced me of this last year (as quite a few people tried to do) but I really now believe that losing my job was for the best. I reevaluted my life and went back to thinking of the things that truley made me happy; 🙂 So, I decided to fufill my lifelong goal of being a vet. You know it's weird how life gets in the way, and you go in one direction only to realize that you should have went with your intuition orginally. That's okay. I'm here now. You're here now. That's so cool...meeting people like you. 😉 I'd love to talk more about your personal journey. Sometimes I feel like I am alone in this. You can pm me if you'd like. I know I got a bit off topic. Sorry about that.
I think I'm hijacking this thread. Oops! Better go... :hijacked:

Come on TT!! Work your magic!

I'm a non-traditional as well, but never completed any undergrad work. I was positive I would make a living as a horse trainer/barn manager. Well, when the light finally dawned that unless you have a lot of money backing you, it's REALLY hard to do that...I made the decision to go to school to get my pre reqs done. I have 23 credits left before I apply to schools in Australia/NZ, and if I don't get in, I'll just continue until I have the pre reqs to apply here...about 2 years worth. I'd actually rather go to school abroad, so I'd be applying to schools overseas the whole time I am working on my undergrad! 🙂
