There are also "Preliminary" programs under Internal Medicine and General Surgery. Apparently, there are Preliminary years in other specialties like Peds and OB/GYN, but you'll have to make sure they're ABA/ACGME compliant for Anesthesiology PGY1.

Dang. Looks like I'm going to have to apply to more programs than I thought thanks to the whole prelim thing.

In terms of the personal statement and LoRs, does this need to reflect "medicine/surgery" or could it all reflect "anesthesiology"?

Our medicine advisor told us (for prelim medicine) to use the same letters.

For the PS, just add another final paragraph why a medicine year will help you.
