I'm applying for anesthesia and am hoping (of course) to just match into a categorical spot BUT I still have to figure out how many prelims I need to apply to in order to get a good supplemental list for each city.

I'm applying to advanced positions in Boston, Philly, DC, and Baltimore so that's where I am looking at prelims. I would prefer to do prelim medicine or a TY.

Would 10 programs per city be too many (or too few)? I hopefully won't have to go on that many interviews but it can't hurt to apply right?

thanks!

40 prelims??!!

I've heard that if you're a strong candidate for anesthesia or rads or derm or whatever, then you can apply for ~10 TY or prelim spots and be fine.

anyone else care to comment on this? anyone burned and had to scramble?

sorry, also should've clarified that I need to be in the same city as where I match for the advanced position (couples match, family obligations, etc). So, I need 3 supplemental lists: Boston, Philly, DC/Baltimore.

So would 10 in each of those cities be too many?

I am also couples matching (Neurology/Family Medicine), but we're not necessarily doing the big cities approach because most of our favorite programs are not in New York or Boston, etc. Since I have to do a prelim, I am applying to anywhere from 1-5 per city, average around 3-4. I don't think there's a max number, because you can always triage and cancel interviews when you have a better idea of which advanced programs you're interviewing, but you have to ask yourself how many interviews you're willing to go on. I don't see myself interviewing at more than 15 places, period, but I'm applying to a lot more than that and we'll see where the cards fall.
