What is the average # of programs that FM applicants rank in order to be matched? I know that it varies but if there is any residents who can share their experiences, I would really appreciate it.

I am having rank list anxiety...

Thank you.

I did 8.

The advice I heard most often is simply "Rank the programs where you wouldn't mind spending 3 years of your life". Now, obviously, you do need to take into account things like GPA, step scores, where you interviewed, and so on. But if you're even halfway competitive for FM, the advice I was given should work well for you.

Number of ranks for a US senior had little effect on chance of matching (people with 1 or 2 still had ~90% chance of matching). So like others have said...go with the places you like.

Source.

You should rank 9 programs. No more. No less. 9 programs is the only way you will assure yourself the optimal match, maximum life happiness, and 6-pack abs.
