Not too shabby. The only standout for me is Wake...really? "One of these things just doesn't belong here..." I don't think they're as bad as I make them out to be, but I think there are better programs in the southeast. Consider MUSC, UVA, VCU, or something in DC or MD instead?

Washington University or University of Washington? Also, why Boston and Tufts but none of the Harvards? You're applying to Columbia and UCSF, so it's not like you're avoiding the bigger name types of places.

Agree with the other poster who mentioned that you didn't add any of the Harvard programs-- doesn't quite make sense considering you have Columbia, NYU, Stanford, and UCSF on that list. May as well add MGH/McLean, Cambridge, and Longwood while you're in the area. Also, have you considered Brown at all? Awesome program. You can always pick and choose interviews but if you apply late then you have fewer options, not more.

I didn't apply to Wake but I heard from someone that did that the program has a very relaxed, friendly feel. That person ranked Wake way higher than its neighbor Duke (but liked UNC as well).

Of course UVa holds a special place in my heart (alum here), and I have to agree it is the whole package--- University program, great location, friendly vibe, overall a very happy place to be. I don't know how Wake is but I know UVa psych is a wonderful department to work with.

I applied to 21 (I'm a PGY-2 now). FREIDA said there was that many academic programs in the geographical area I wanted to be in, so I applied to all of them. So like the poster I'm quoting, I don't know what to vote for.

Are you applying to Oklahoma (based on signature)? It sounds like you did well in medical school, I think you will find a match in your home state if that is what you want. Maybe apply to ten to be safe?

I agree with Bartelby -- you're a lock in for matching in Oklahoma. Honestly, I'd probably skip Griffin, too. I'd do OU-OKC, OU-Tulsa and throw in some of the stronger regional programs (it sounds like you want to stay close even if you have to go out of state), like Arkansas, UTSW, Wash U, UNM ... applying to maybe 10 places. Or keep the 10 number but pick programs farther away that you think you'd really like. Either way, you're almost 100% guaranteed to be able to stay in Oklahoma.

About OU-OKC, I've heard that the residents are super involved in selecting candidates. I think someone here said they actually make the rank list, and then the faculty adjust it. So I'd focus on what you're already doing -- developing good relationships with the residents. Let them know you're really interested in psych and really interested in staying put.

You know, there's no one great place. There's information here, at scutwork (google that name) and on each individual program's website. You can also ask your attendings for advice, but it seems like most people in Oklahoma trained in Oklahoma, limiting their knowledge somewhat.

I'd say check out these programs if you're looking for mostly neighboring states. I'm sure others can add information as well. Of course this is all subjective, but I think that's how it goes.

- Arkansas
- UTSW-Dallas
- UTMB? (TexasPhysician is a fan and can give you more information)
- WashU -- very upfront about being biologically oriented. Lots of research.
- UNM -- some big name people; diverse training sites; good food
- Colorado -- well-known program. Lots of opportunities. Maybe less touchy-feely.
- Iowa -- reported to be a good program in the region. Smaller city/college town atmosphere.
- Tulane? One of their inpatient sites might be closing. If you like Edmond, you might not like New Orleans.
- Northwestern -- they have a few OU grads. Well organized, well regarded in midwest type of program.
- UIC?

If you're willing to go farther away, you could think about UNC, Duke, MUSC, USC-Palmetto, MCW, UWisc, Michigan .... Of course I'm assuming that as an Oklahoman, you'd be most interested in the Midwest and South if you had to go farther away from home.

I only applied to MD programs. I've recieved 21 interview invitations. I'm not really sure how many places I'll rank, but I'm only interviewing at 13 of the programs that have offered me an interview so far.

Yep, that sounds fine to me. I'm a DO with similar stats and applied to 55 programs and received about 25 interview invites. Went on 13. I applied to a broad range of higher to lower focusing mostly on the mid-tier. Mostly South and Midwest programs.

I think the number depends on whether you are MD, DO and foreign, domestic etc. Also your scores and grades, interview skills. No red flags. Generally if you get 8-10 interviews you are safe to match at close to 99% based on last Charting Outcomes I saw.

Probably more than enough. I never took the USMLE. Applied maybe 50 mid to upper programs + few safeties and had more interviews than I cared to attend.

Probably could get away with 20.....Depends on how DO friendly the programs are. 30 is a good number. I am not a DO expert but in general I believe they apply to about 10-15 more programs than a US MD.
