Hey,

Just wondering how many schools everyone has applied to? I'm in AZ and was wondering what schools any AZ residents have been successful at getting in. Which schools "just say no" to non-residents? I don't want to waste my time and money. I'm sure it all depends on stats as well, so if you have a comment please let me know what your stats were if you applied and had a bad/good experience with any. Appreciate it!

Well, although Im not from AZ, there are a lot of state schools which although accept out of state students they may only accept a handful. I know for instance UF, UCLA, UCSF, SUNY (both schools) interview a few out of staters, but only accept a small percentage. I only applied to 8 or 9 schools (that being on AADSAS, but didn't go to all the interviews). You're right it costs a ton, and going on interviews REALLY makes you see how much money it costs being an applicant.

All the best!

I actually only applied to one school--I won't tell, but look hard and you can probably figure it out 😀

My reasons for only applying to IUSD boiled down to two. First, my in-state chances looked very good (as most in-staters' do). IUSD typically admits about 65% of instate applicants, compared to ~10% of foreigners, so there's a 55% boost in my chances before they even open my application file.

Second, I haven't always been die-hard for dentistry; my fiancee goes to school 20 miles down the road from me, and I've never been willing to for an extended separation simply for the sake of work. If I didn't get in to IUSD, Franklin has a phenomenal placement rate in the pharm sales field (several upscale contacts at Lilly HQ up the road in Indy), so I just planned to do that instead.

Maybe that renders me inadequately hardcore to be a dentist...but I'd take Rachel over a job offer any day of the week, and that's what the matter would boil down to 😉
