How many spots on AMCAS should I split these activities into?

Hello everyone, so basically I started out working as a clinical research associate under a pi during my junior and senior years. This was strictly research and a pub will be in press by the time I apply next cycle.

Through the research I stated above, I ultimately gave a poster presentation at a university conference. I also gave a oral/ podium presentation at a large regional conference.

The pi, further allowed me to work in her clinic, separately, which included massive amounts of UNIQUE clinical experience and patient interaction- I was paid for this too. This specific work was for a total of 8 months, so is it worth keeping in my app? My concern is the length of time- I stopped because I graduated.

So how should I split these activities up in AMCAS? How many different slots do you think I should include? Thanks.

It really depends on the other activities you’re including in your app and if you have enough space.

Since you are essentially a traditional applicant, I assume you have the space to split it into several entries (but don’t double count any hours):

1) research
2) publication
3) presentations (put both poster and oral presentation in one activity and describe both)
4) clinical experience

If you have any additional experiences that fall into any of these categories, you can group them in the same entry.

I concur.

I would prioritize them as:
1. employment, clinical (the fact that the end date corresponds to graduation and the location was close to college will make it obvious that you left because you graduated and moved on)
2. research
3. publication
4. presentation

If you don't have enough room for everything, drop things starting with the bottom of the list. If you have to drop 3 and/or 4, collapse those into #2.

To tighten things up, I suggest 3 slots:
1) Employment- Medical/Clinical.
2) Research.
3) Publication. Since the data set is the same for the Podium Presentation and Poster, I'd mention them in the same space as your citation for the Publication. If the manuscript has not yet been accepted by submission time, then instead, use a Presentations space, highlighting the podium talk at the regional conference, and mentioning the local poster as an aside.

Thanks for your response @LizzyM. Going off of what you said I will include the employment, clinical section as its own. Even though, I am moving back home, I am actually planning on volunteering with the same exact groups of individuals being treated for the same debilitating illness that was the source of my focus in my employment.

Would it be alright if i group the two in the same category "employment, clinical" because of how similar the activity is, with the only difference being the paid portion was for 8 months and my volunteering would be another 7 additional months by the time I apply.
-I can separate it into two dates and specifically mention that i was paid for the for 8 months portion and I continued more or less a similar activity after as a volunteering event. What do you think?

I would split employment and volunteering. When an adcom skims an application and looks at the tags (only one tag per activity) you don't want them to miss something they are specifically looking for, such as recent volunteerism, because it is tagged "employment".

Understood, so in that case do you think having an paid activity of this sort for 8 months on amcas looks alright to you? I basically worked as a clinical research coordinator while in undergrad, while completely immersing myself with the clinic and it was super hands on.

All my other activities are at least a year or more, so it just feels weird putting down something with a smaller time frame is all!
