How many units are you taking while working?

Hello, I will be working full-time (40 hrs/wk) as a licensed Pharmacy Technician in the very near future.

I am planning on taking 2 undergraduate courses, an average of 8 units per semester while holding down my full-time position.

For those of you who are or have worked full-time while taking undergraduate courses, please tell me how many units and or classes you took while holding down your full-time job, and if you felt that the class load was too much, not enough, or just right.

I just recently had this expierence. I was working full time at a company and ended up quiting because work was taking up to much of my study time. Make sure you manage your time correctly.

I am actually working 40 hours a week at the hospital during the day from 8:30-5:00 and I take two classes both with labs. One is organic I and the other A&P I. The good thing about the A&P is that it is on-line and we only have to meet once a week (Tues) for a 3 hour lab. I hate the lab but, the on-line portion works out great for me! I have a B in Org I and an A in A&P. It's hard to balance work and school. I just take time out to study in the evening and on the weekends. That is when I am not trying to make up time I miss during the week. I usually have to go in on Sat. to make up a couple of hours for leaving early to get to A&P lab. I feel that this is just enough. If I had to go to campus for lecture for A&P it would be too much. You just have to figure out when the best time is to study and stick to a schedule. 😉

From my experience if you work fulltime and load up on classes, you will more than likely burnout or fail. I know a handful of you will disagree with that but from what I've read here my statement seems to be true. I have always worked 40+hrs and week and in Spring 04 I started my pre-reqs with 15 hrs. I took 2 classes during that summer and the following Fall I took 11 hrs. Basically I had to take fewer classes each sememster. I had little time to study or sleep and I didn't want to jeopardize my GPA. Also, as the classes get harder, like Calc and O Chem you have to invest more time studying. Then think about the lab times. Almost 4 hrs in Bio, Chem, and Phys lab..each. This semester I am down to O Chem and lab. I dropped the Calc b/c it was too time consuming. But I guess it all comes down to how well you know yourself. Do YOU think you can handle it all? BTW...NEVER EVER WORK GRAVEYARD SHIFT WHILE ATTENDING SCHOOL DURING THE DAY. Sorry for the caps but I had to get my point across.

I'm premed so forgive me for stumbling upon this forum. 😀 I carry a full course load (14) credit hours (which includes organic chem), I work 16 hrs a week as a PCT on the weekends and do a 12 hr shift 6am to 6pm every tuesday on my local rescue squad as an EMT. Honestly, I would say work as little as you can afford to work. My quality of life is just too low; its not worth doing more than you need to.

Two courses should be plenty, especially if they have labs. Last Spring I worked 40 hours by day, took Organic Chem and Microbio (both w/lab) by night. It only got crazy when I had tests on back to back nights and no time to study. Thats when I learned to stuff flashcards in my pocket at work and pull them out everytime I stood still for more than a minute.
