Hi, I’m a college student and doing bio, I was wondering how many people come to your clinic every day and how many hours do you work every day? How many days a week? I just want to get the hang of “dentist lifestyle” in his/her clinic. Thank you🙂

That really depends on the dentist. Some work 5 days a week, some only 3. If you're interested in dentistry, the best thing to do is to call up a few dentists in your area and ask if you can shadow them.

depends on how big your practice is and what you want to work really. the practice i currently work at will seat about 85-90 patients/day with 2 orthodontists. the practice downstairs is a combined pedo/pedo-ortho clinic and they seat about 150/day with 2 doctors. Also, you have to look at what kind of procedures you're doing..if they're simple specs, then they can be in and out in 5 minutes, or you could be doing an endo case for 2 hours.

thank you, so you think if i just call them for shadowing they will say yes, even though they have never seen me or should i just call my own dentist??

its hit or miss. my own dentist who i've seen for 20 years turned me down. having a dentist friend would be helpful, or someone who knows a dentist personally and can ask for you, but a lot of people randomly call and ask too. worst case they say no.

also, there are vastly different numbers of patients seen for orthodontists vs general practitioners. ortho patients are usually in for 20 minutes to get bands changed and they see 50+, a general practitioner is gonna see more like 10-20 a day. typical day for a gp is a major (crown, root canal) at 8am and 1pm, and then as many cavities/extractions/whatever as they can handle during the rest of the day, but you can tailor your day to see more or less patients, doing different procedures, just depending on what you like.

The easiest is to start by asking your own dentist. If he/she doesn't want to then just ask them if they know any other dentists that would be willing to let you shadow. That's how I got my shadowing in. Went to my own dentist to shadow for a few weeks and then he referred me to another dentist, did another few weeks there, and then he referred me to several specialists and a dental lab.....so it all goes from there.

If not, you can randomly call up dentists' offices and ask around.
