How many volunteering hours do I need to apply to "service-heavy" schools and have a shot?

I see a lot about schools like Franklin, Loyola, Georgetown, Temple liking a lot of service hours. However, it’s unclear what number of hours to aim for. Is it as high as a thousand? Or is it enough to have 2-300? I know it’s important to write effectively about your interest in and the importance of service in your secondaries, but I’m sure there’s a number they’re looking/screening for to be competitive

edit: if anyone has anecdotal info about Rosalind Franklin, Oakland, Georgetown, Temple Loyola, Geisinger, Creighton, or Tulane… let me know!

Franklin as in rosalind franklin? They dont require an insane amount of hours. I got an interview with maybe 500 nonclinical volunteering hours.

I have heard that rush / loyola expect #s in the 1000s, especially considering they get 10k+ applications every year.

Not sure about GT or Temple.

500 feels like a lot but it does seem reasonable for a service heavy school. thousands is crazy though

To be fair ive had like 4 gap years hahahahah. I definitely think RFU looks at applicants with less.

And to be fair, especially if you fit the mission of these other service oriented schools, they will definitely consider you too. I think the thousands number comes from an average — which doesnt necessarily mean its a requirement. Im sure there are people with less who go.

Rush, Loyola, and some of the Jesuit schools put a lot of weight on service. Rush is big into this, and I think they publish class profiles with hundreds (like 700+) as the average number (I prefer seeing medians, which likely are nearer to 1000, but I don't have a basis for this). You can get by with 250+ for most schools. and 150 is usually the functional minimum when submitting an application (service orientation activities: food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation).

200+, but more is always better. And love what you do, and do what you love.
