Would you still have stayed in healthcare if you did not get into med school/weren't able to become a doctor?

It seems like there's a growing trend of people who would be okay with becoming nurses/murses/noctors/PAs if med school doesn't pan out. This means less people who genuinely want to be nurses but more who are devoted to healthcare.

What would you have done?

I'd be okay being a murse or a PA. Probably a PA, since I've gone through the trouble of UG.

I'm currently in medical research at a large hospital right now.. but wouldn't want to do lab work forever. I would probably apply to PA school if I was not accepted after several cycles. (Luckily I was accepted! 😀 )

If I hadn't gotten in I would have worked hard to marry a doctor so I could at least be a doctor's wife...

Probably would have gone ahead and declared for the NBA draft.

I probably would have done a PhD medical physics... assuming that the physics world didn't seduce me before I finished. If I were starting over today and didn't get into med school, I'd do a PhD in neuroscience.

I think if I wasn't a doctor, I would've shifted my focus from actual clinical care to some angle of business/finance - related to healthcare (such as consulting). Although, ultimately, I may still do that some day.

If I could have been guaranteed to become a CRNA after going to nursing school, then I would have done that.

If AA's were licensed in Illinois, that would be good too.

Otherwise I will just need to settle for making millions of dollars as an entrepreneur which is considered super easy on the pre-allo board. :naughty:

No, I wouldn't be a nurse or PA or something. I would probably be in small business and work for myself or somebody else in my family.

Interesting question, I don't think I would do anything healthcare related if I couldn't be an MD. I have worked at a "lower" rung position in a hospital and I really think I want to be in charge of decisions and management of patients. Not trying to say that PA's and nurses aren't important or don't dictate decisions, but I like being the go-to-guy.

Would have become a bioengineer or PA. Wife is a PA. Would have been nice to finish training quickly and have freedom to move and live wherever I want versus having to pick up to move for residency and later for fellowship. Plus it would have been nice to be young and have enough money to be even more than comfortable before having a child. And go on nice vacations too.

Your name has two possible interpretations..

Probably gone into medical bench research, maybe a PhD program. I don't think I would want to be a nurse, tbh.

I was originally a business major then nursing - planning on being a N.P. or C.N.A. so I guess I would be a nurse!

If I hadn't gotten into med school, then I would've looked into the military.

though if I could go to way back before I started college I'd likely choose dentistry instead.

My friend couldn't get into medical school, so she became a nurse practitioner through an accelerated 3 year program. She graduated last year and is making 90k a year. Her stress level is 3/10; her practice is autonomous. She basically manages three clinics... I would have done NP if I didn't get into medical school. Not PA because they cannot practice independent of a physician.

But PAs have shorter training (no nursing school). Literally 2 years post college and you are done.

I have a friend who is becoming an AA, which is the PA equiv of a nurse anesthetist. It's 2 years after college and you start well over 100K....actually close to that of a family med doc.

I would be a Dentist. Maybe a PA.

If I couldn't be those, I would be a historian, but nobody is going to pay me to do that 🙁.

I would absolutely not have become a nurse/noctor. I had 4 years of higher education prior to med school and was in a position to apply for PhDs and so on. Nursing would not have been a decent use of my "resources", to put it in very dry terms. That said, I dislike the idea of working in a lab, so PhDs would have been out too.

I would have most likely tried to become a vet. I like doctoring: my first preference is absolutely humans, but if for some reason that couldn't ever happen, I would be okay with taking care of animals instead. Perhaps equine or zoological veterinary practice. Wild animal biology truly fascinates me, I would have been pretty happy being a wild animal vet I think.

Over 100k after two years? That's ridiculous.

No.

Once you hit midlevel there are better jobs in business and sales. Top preformers in other fields can earn what surgeons do now.

Im not devoted to health care. I'm devoted to doing my best in whatever field that interests me.

Amen brotha

Had I not gotten into medical school after two years of trying, I probably would have become a nurse-midwife. I was a hair's breadth away from applying to a midwifery program for a few months before I realized I wanted to go back to my original plan of going to medical school.
