How many years after dental school does it take to specialize?
Do different specialties require longer periods of training than others? I would assume so, but I'd like a definate answer.
If anyone knows, can you tell me how long it takes to specialize for each specialty i.e. orthodontics, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgeon etc.?
What is involved in becoming a specialist, do you just train under another specialist and take certain classes?
Thank you.

seanjohn,

Yes, specialties have different timeframes associated with each program. Most programs take an additional 2-3 years after dental school, although Oral Surgery takes 4 years, or 6 years if you choose the MD-degree route.

Others can probably give you the exact numbers for each specialty program.

Being in such a program is comprised of didactic classes, as well as clinical training. The program you attend will determine what methods are used in your training, and what types of experience you receive.
