Hi I am wondering,
How many years after you graduate med school can you begin practicing anesthesiology?
Is it three years or is it a total of four three plus one year intership?

Internship year + 3 years of anesthesia.

Hi,
I had the impression that you only needed to do an intership year if you did a osteopathic residency and if you did an allopathic residency you didnt need to do the internship year?
Am I wrong?

I heard talk of increasing the length of residecy to 5 yrs, anyonelse hear that?

You have to do an internship prior to 3 years of anesthesia as an MD also. As a DO, I did the traditional osteopathic internship. (which is accepted by all ACGME residencies) The other (Allopathic) residents in my program did either surgical, medicine, or transitional year internships.

I heard rumors that the ASA wanted to make you complete the internship at the same place you do your residency.

would the ASA also encourage/enforce the programs to provide the intern year? it would make sense if they did...

i'm personally all for making the intern year a part of the residency and eliminating the need to apply and interview separately for both. reasons why:

1. you don't hav to spend a year learning the ins and outs of one institution and then get uprooted to go to another institution to learn the ins and outs there

2. you can make connections inside and outside the department earlier. is it really that bad to get to know the attending and resident surgeons early on?

3. call me lazy, but i'm all for making the interview trail shorter. doing double the interviews just seems so inefficient to me, especially for those who only have a limited time to interview...
