I have yet to hear from a good number of institutions on my list. Is it appropriate to panic now if I still haven't heard from certain programs about interviews? Or are some of these programs slow and not yet done inviting? A related question is, if you do not make it in the first round of interviews at a certain place, is there a "second wave" of invitations that occurs for the applicants who they consider to not be as strong? Just trying to figure out what to expect in the coming weeks...

You can examine the past thread and draw your own conclusions. Unfortunately, they were somewhat slipshod last year and started a different format in the middle... probably someone with inappropriately gelled hair on an iPhone came up with the idea:

If you get an invite at this point, it is confusing to know what it signifies. I definitely know people last year that were in the second or third wave of invites that subsequently were matched at the program. In January, I would favor saying that it was a safety invite, but if you are enthusiastic about the program, then I would go because you never know.
