If I do post bac and get straight As with high MCAT, can it compensate for mediocre total GPA? I've been out of school 9 years now, so I am a lot more mature than I was before. I always do well in school when I try and have a knack for standardized tests, so I'm not worried about achieving it. I just don't know if complete waste of time if cumulative GPA still stinks after. Also, how important are letters of rec? I work with many docs I could get letters from, just wondering.

"If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candies and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas!!"

Joking aside, I think the rule of thumb is that a student can overcome a bad GPA if can be raised to a 3.0+. I did and so did many others.

If your reasons to return to school to be a physician are good (i.e., not "it's always been a childhood dream"), then you should just jump right in and find out what you're capable of. I did this with my first semester back and it went so well that I went full force after that. I'll be matriculating this fall.

Good luck!

Haha, m aunt always says that saying. I crunched numbers and I can theoretically pull it up to 3.1.

As to my reasons behind it, no not my childhood dream. That was to be a fairy/princess, but those plans fell through. I'm currently a nurse and feel bored with career. I want to learn so much more and do more with that knowledge. I really don't feel as if I'm maximizing my potential. I'm sure better way to word it more eloquently for apps

My mom is a nurse and my girlfriend is a nurse, so I'm a strong advocate for nurses. I'm sure you'll spin your reason better, but go for it, give it hell and I'll be rooting for you!!

PM me if I can help anymore.

EDIT: Also, there's a number of people here who have done the RN to physician thing. Many of them are really incredible, so spend some time getting familiar with their stories.

PS thanks for info If people can get in with that, worth trying. Also, Grades were before RN degree. I did accelerated program as 2nd degree. It was those first few 2 years of 1st degree that are horrific

Edit: wasn't trying to dis RNs. I have tons of nurse friends and family. I love nurses, don't love nursing

I'm keenly aware of the plights of nursing. I think medicine would be dramatically better if everyone knew this.
