It wasn't that long ago that docs were featured in cigarette advertising. Boy, that was the wrong move. But these days coffee is the big thing...Black Medicine it is sometimes called. And which medical specialty do you think drinks the most coffee? Knowing my own coffee habits, I would have guessed that we anesthesiologists would have been at the top of the heap. Nope! We're actually closer to the bottom! Ortho surgeons have everyone beat.

But maybe we should be drinking more coffee. So many different good benefits being described. Frankly I'm surprised that docs don't get featured in more coffee ads these days.

1 cup usually 80% of the time. 2 cups 17-18% of the time. Rare for me to be on 3rd cup.

And I drink the cheapest less potent coffee as possible.

My brother and sister on the other hand have a 6 shot espresso.

That range of consumption is associated with increased lifespan:claps:. I can't drink that much.

No joke! The more you drink the longer you might live. The only negative association is that coffee drinkers are more likely to also be cigarette smokers, and therefore cancer rates seem to not be impacted beneficially by coffee consumption.

I'm probably 2 cups on a normal weekday and 3-4 cups when I'm post-call. My definition of "cup" can fluctuate...especially once the weather warms up and I make my cold brew.

Usually just a cup (and by cup I mean a Big Gulp)....JK. I usually get somewhere in the 150-200mg range. Which translates to one energy drink.

I try not to drink too much coffee or anything else before heading into the OR. It's bad when the sharps container starts looking like a urinal.

For all you coffee drinkers, I hope you rinse your mouths and chew gum afterward. Coffee breath is pretty gross. But most coffee people don't realize it at all.
If the coffee breath is gross it's bc the breath was gross to begin with. The coffee just flavors it. Non coffee drinkers will never experience the satisfaction of coffee poops. Great for colonic motility

I take some freshly roasted beans from around the world (preferably 8 days since roast) and grind/tamp a 2 puck pour. Good milk foam and a little latte art before heading out to work.

Part of my routine every single morning. Love it.
