I am trying to figure out how much $$ I should have saved up before my 4th year. Including application fees, plane tickets, meals, and hotels - How much did you guys spend on the entire residency application process?

This varies significantly depending on many factors.

1) What specialty? If competative, you'll have to apply to many programs, and also possibly travel to many programs.

2) Community or academic? Generally speaking, academic programs are more spred out, necessitating farther travel (not the case in big cities).

3) Are you looking to stay in your geographic region?

Some people going into FP apply to 5 places within driving range; many FP programs will put you up in a hotel. The average ortho app seems to be applying to 40+ programs all over the country, and going to as many interviews as can be squeezed into the schedule. It really depends...

Emergency Medicine

$4000.00 including USMLE, NRMP registration, ERAS fees, Plane travel, Hotels, Food, and a new suit.

Well, I'm still not sure what I want to go into. So, I suppose it would help if you can mention your specialty as well as how much you spent. Thanks.

Emergency Med. They'll feed you lunch, and maybe dinner the night before. They won't pick up the tab at the hotel.

About $4000, but I drove to all of them. I did 8 interviews for a total of 4000 miles. Step II CS (worthless piece of shi#t) was a very large chunk of this dollar figure.

There is an interview/relocation loan available to 4th years for up to $12,000 through your regular tuition lender. Check this out with your financial aid office.

I needed almost 5 grand. I think most people spent between 2-5 thousand - it usually depends on the specialty, how far afield you're traveling, & how many places you want to visit. Be realistic and expect to spend at least 4 thousand on the whole process

Not including Step 2 Stuff ($1500?): I spent about $1800 on interviews/applications (I know this because I kept track in Quicken). That's 16 programs (Pedi) and only two were within driving distance. But I flew to an area and the rented a car and drove around. I also stayed with current residents (only night in a hotel was paid for by the program). And that was all over the country (CA, MA, PA, VA, NC, etc). I only flew four times (I'm in TX). If you organize well, you will pay less. A friend of mine spent over $5K (just on interviews) for fewer programs because she didn't plan ahead.

I used that too...$12000 from MedEx loans. I got $9000 in loan money for interviews, and $3000 for moving expenses for residency.

I spent a ton of money also...around $4500-5000 to interview at a ton of G Surg places.
